Dolphins under constructionPreparations – locally and overseasThe main materials were prepared in two separate yards, onelocal yard and one in Batam, Indonesia. In the overseas yard, steelfoundation piles were spliced. They were carried in batches by bargeacross 50 kilometres of sea. All precast units, such as capping beams, main roadway girder beams, platform main beams, tie-in beams, secondary tie-beams and slab units were fabricated at a precast yardin Singapore. Quality control systems were in place throughout thepreparation stage, as well as strict monitoring of concrete quality, finishing works and dimensional control.ConstructionThe trestles were constructed on steel open-ended piles, whichwere driven where the seabed was soft and drilled where hard tomoderate rock was encountered. The piles were provided withrock anchors to achieve the required tension capacity. A similarconstruction was used for the platforms: steel foundations withrock anchors, concrete precast beams and ties resting on pile caps, precast double T-slabs and concrete topping. Each jetty has eightdolphins which were constructed using false work and temporarypiles. The breasting dolphin and mooring dolphins were cast in situ, with the use of a floating batching plant.Start sink pipeAccess trestleMechanical worksThe mechanical installation works comprised, amongst others, four marine loading armson each platform, marine gangway towers, maintenance cranes and three sea intakepumps.Welding elbowsBAM International bvP.O.
