Verify and mark which flywheel timing line corresponds with the listed ignition timing from the chart at thebeginning of this section. Refer to the method of dial indicator use for verifying timing marks described onpage 4.12.2. Connect an accurate tach and a good quality timing light to the engine.3. With the engine running at 3000 RPM , point thetiming light at the timing hole.4. With your head positioned so there is a straightline between your eye, the stationary pointer andthe crankshaft center line, note the relativeposition between the marked flywheel line and thestationary pOinter. If the stationary pOinter iswithin the acceptable ± variance, the timing iscorrect. If the pOinter is outside the variance, thestator will have to be rotated either withcrankshaft rotation to retard the timing, or againstrotation to advance it. NOTE: The recoil andrecoil cup must be removed to loosen the statorbolts and change the timing. 'Acceptable VarianceFlywheelRotation!5. Make sure all nuts and bolts are properly tightened after making adjustments.8/94 4.18Flywheel LinesStationaryPointersNOTE: Acceptable variance is usuallyone line on either side of the dial indicatedtiming mark.
