These grants aredirected towards education, scholarship and otherinternational programs.In 2009, 150 volunteers completed approximately 1,000hours of community service. Community service hourswere focused in the areas of education, environment,healthcare and community development. Projectsinclude caring for the elderly, teaching and mentoringchildren, protecting and cleaning the environment andvarious other activities. Signature ProgramsGE Global Research Europe (www.ge.com/researcheurope)One way that GE invests in innovation in Germany is through their high-tech resesarch anddevelopment site located in Bavaria. In 2004, GE founded its European Research center, GE GlobalResearch Europe, on the campus of the Technical University of Munich. Since the opening of thesite, GE has invested around $150 million in site infrastructure and projects. Today, approximately150 scientists from more than 20 nations work here on innovative technologies with a focus on renewable energy andhealthcare. Early 2010, GRC-E announced two highlight projects: The center will invest together with RWE, Zueblin, andthe German Aerospace Center (DLR), a total of 10 million Euro in the development of ADELE, an adiabatic compressedairenergy storage system. Moreover, GE Global Research Europe opened its new competence center for high-powerelectronics, creating some 20 jobs for highly-qualified engineers and researchers and 5 million Euro in infrastructure.The first ecomagination certified product that originated from the site is the waste heat recovery system"ORegen". Recently, GE Global Research Europe has announced an investment of $7.5 million to open a carboncomposites automated manufacturing Center of Excellence with the Technical University of Munich.Forest Planting CampaignSince 1993, GE has planted more than 85,000 young trees in the mountains near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, together with students from the University of the Federal Armed Forcesof Munich. Most parts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen would not be inhabitable without the soundmountain wood. The tree population in the high mountains protects the valley from floodingbecause precipitation can be much better absorbed by woodlands than open space. In addition,mountain woods hold off avalanches and mudslides.Bavarian Red CrossGE Volunteers in Munich initiated a partnership with the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK). The GE Volunteersvisit the nursinghome for elderly people in downtown Munich and organized several activities with the elderly people. GE also supportsthe kindergarden “Sonnenblume” of the BRK Munich.Business StrategyEcomagination (www.ecomagination.com)Many ecomagination products are developed and manufactured in the German speakingregion. For example, we will invest around €105 million into a new wind offshore engineeringcenter in Hamburg, as well as the expansion of our existing European Headquarters for Renewablesin Salzbergen, and our European research center near Munich, creating 100 new “green”jobs by the year 2016. Oil and Gas pipelines can be monitored and maintained all over the worldwith the help of the “UltraScan” Duo technology from our site in Stutensee; four of our Austrian Jenbacher gas enginesare ecomagination approved; Early 2010, our new GE Aviation site in Regensburg will begin manufacturing turbineblades made of an extremely light material. They will be used in the GEnx, the latest GE aircraft engine, anecomagination product; In November 2009, with ecomagination GE received the German Sustainability Award as one ofthe Top 3 companies in the category “Most Sustainable Future Strategies”. GE in Germany's Sensing & InspectionTechnologies site in Huerth is among the 50 GE "eCO2 Certified Sites" that reduced their emissions collectively by nearly174,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalents.Healthymagination (www.healthymagination.com)In 2009, GE partnered with local healthcare experts to support the healthymagination kick-off in Germany. In parallel, GEin Germany started a Healthy Worksite Week in 18 major locations in Germany with programs to improve our employee’shealth.
