TI/P 3649 e February 2007 Page 3 of 4 Eukesolar E liquid dyesVe r y deep shades can be obtained by replacing some of the high-boilingsolvents with volatile organic solvents that are miscible with water, such asmethanol, ethanol, isopropanol or acetone. Finishes that contain EukesolarE liquid dyes in their concentrated or diluted form should not be mixed untilshortly before they are to be applied, and they should be used up as quicklyas possible. We would always recommend testing the stability of dilute solutions ofEukesolar E liquid dyes in advance.L e a t h e r s that have been dyed or printed must be completely dry before theyare piled on top of each other, because any unevaporated solvent that is stillpresent can cause the dye to migrate into the interior of the leather.Examples1. Spray dyeinga) Here, the dye should be diluted with 2 – 4 times its own volume ofSolvenon PM and then 5 – 8 times its own volume of water should beadded.b) D e e p , brilliant shades can usually be obtained by spraying the leatherwith concentrated dye solutions with a low solvent content. Here, it issufficient to dilute the Eukesolar E liquid dyes with 1 – 2 times theirown volume of water. However, the problem here is that the Eukesolar E liquid dyes are anionicand they can form sparingly soluble salts if dilute solutions are preparedwith hard water. If solutions cannot be diluted with demineralizedwater, we would recommend sequestering the hard water salts withcomplexing agents such as Trilon A Liquid or Trilon B Liquid. Furtherinformation on BASF’s range of complexing agents can be found on theinternet at www.basf.com/detergents. Advice on the concentrations ofcomplexing agents that are required relative to the water hardness isgiven in the Technical Information leaflets for these products.2. Dyeing and shading finishesA q u e o u s finishes can be colored by diluting the Eukesolar E liquid dye1 : 1 with Solvenon PM and then stirring it in to the dilute polymer dispersion.3. Printing leatherL e a t h e r that is to be printed has to be of uniform thickness. The maximumvariation in thickness that can be tolerated is 0.2 mm. The leatheralso has to be free of dust.T h e viscosity of pastes used for printing has to be higher than that ofdyes applied by spraying or padding. The viscosity of printing pastes canbe adjusted by adding products such as Lepton ® Paste VL. The viscosityshould be in the 15 – 30 sec range (DIN 53221). A high viscosity isrequired for printing sharply defined patterns, and a lower viscosity forprinting large areas.4. Shading nitrocellulose lacquersS o l v e n t - b a s e d lacquers can be shaded with 5 – 10 parts ofEukesolar E liquid dye per 100 parts of finish.F u r t h e r information on the BASF products mentioned in connection with theEukesolar E liquid dyes is given in the corresponding technical informationleaflets. Please file this leaflet in your “Finishing” binder, Section 1.
