The controller’s memory ofdischarge patterns enables the controller to know the degree of battery sulfation. This allowseven greater accuracy towards determining true battery SOC. The self-learning controller automaticallyadjusts for the capacity and age of the battery. The resultant battery SOC is displayedwithin a 10% accuracy range. The patented hybrid regulator design combines both series andshunt technology for nominal power consumption. Maximum wire gauge for terminal: 4 AWG.The Tarom features adjustable set points that are stored in the controller's memory. AvailableTarom options are an external data logger, external shunts for measuring current and a remotetemperature sensor. Other options include control modules that load shed or PV shed based onthe battery SOC that is communicated with the controller over a DC databus. The Ultimate Photovoltaic ChargeController... Increases ChargeCurrent Up To 30% Or More!Solar Boost 3048 is a 24/48 volt photovoltaic (PV)charge controller capable of delivering up to 30 amps ofoutput current. Patented Maximum Power Point Tracking(MPPT) technology allows Solar Boost 3048 to increasecharge current up to 30% or more compared to conventionalcharge controllers. Controllers without MPPTtechnology simply can’t deliver the charge current providedby Solar Boost 3048. Don’t waste money by throwing PVpower away! Get the power you paid for with Solar Boost3048.Solar Boost 3048 does much more than increasecharge current. It offers an advanced fully automatic threestage charge control system to ensure the battery isproperly and fully charged, resulting in enhanced batteryperformance with less battery maintenance. An electroniccurrent limit feature prevents output current fromexceeding 30 amps. Output current limit eliminates worryabout overload or nuisance fuse blow when PV powerproduction is unexpectedly high. An equalize function isalso included to periodically condition liquid electrolytelead-acid batteries. An optional user friendly digital display is available tomonitor PV charge performance. ! How Does Solar Boost 3048Increase Charge Current?Solar Boost 3048 increases charge current byoperating the PV module in a manner that allows themodule to produce all the power it is capable of. Aconventional charge controller simply connects the moduleto the battery when the battery is discharged. When the75W module in this example is connected directly to abattery charging at 12 volts its power production isartificially limited to about 53 watts. This wastes awhopping 22 watts or nearly 30% of the available power!Typical 75W PV Module Performance25°C • 1000W/m 2Solar Boost 3048’s patented MPPT technologyoperates in a very different fashion. Solar Boost 3048calculates the module’s maximum power voltage, in thiscase 17 volts, and then operates the module at 17 volts toextract maximum power. The maximum power voltage iscontinually recalculated as operating conditions change.Module power, now 75 watts, feeds a high efficiencypower converter which reduces the 17 volt input to batteryvoltage at the output. The full 75 watts delivered at 12 voltswould produce 6.25 amps. An increase of 1.8 amps or40% is achieved by converting the 22 watts that wouldhave been wasted into useable charge current. This 12volt example assumes 100% efficiency to illustrate theprincipal of operation. Actual boost will be somewhat lessas some power is lost in wiring, fuses and in the SolarBoost 3048 controller.! How Much Increase Will You See?The actual charge current increase you will receivevaries with module temperature and battery voltage.Lower module temperature increases available power, while lower battery voltage increases current for a givenPV module power level. In comfortable temperaturescurrent increase typically varies between 10 - 25%, with30% or more easily achieved with a discharged batteryand cooler temperatures. What you can be sure of is thatSolar Boost 3048 will deliver the highest charge currentpossible for a given set of operating conditions. Inconditions where extra power is not available, SolarBoost 3048 will operate as a conventional series passcontroller with very low forward voltage drop.! Three Stage Charging Taken To TheNext Level…Solar Boost 3048 uses the familiar three stage, Bulk,Acceptance, Float charge algorithm. But, controllers thatdetermine full charge based on time or other factors notdirectly related to battery state of charge cannot realize allthe benefits three stage charging has to offer.Solar Boost 3048 uses battery charge current matchedto battery size in amp-hours to determine full charge. Thismethod charges the battery quickly and completely withoutundercharge, overcharge or excessive water loss. Whenbattery load is highly variable during charge, Solar Boost3048 can further optimize charge control by using anexternal current shunt measuring net battery current. Ifdesired, Solar Boost 3048 can also operate as a twostage charger.! When the 75W module in this example isconnected directly to a battery charging at 12 volts its powerproduction is artificially limited to about 53 watts. This wastesa whopping 22 watts or nearly 30% of the available power!Patented MPPT technology used in Solar Boost controllersoperates in a very different fashion. The Solar Boost controllercontinually calculates the module’s maximum power voltage,in this case 17 volts. It then operates the module at itsmaximum power voltage to extract maximum power. Thehigher power extracted from the module is then provided tothe battery in the form of increased charge current. Inconditions where extra PV power is not available, Solar Boostcontrollers will operate as a conventional controller with verylow voltage drop.Typical 75W PV Module Performance 25ºC Cell • 1000W/m 2PV AMPS543210Conventional controllercharging at 12V onlyextracts about 53W.0Solar Boost MPPTcontroller operates module atits maximum power voltageextracting full 75W.5 10 15 20 25PV VOLTS100806040200The actual charge current increase you will see variesprimarily with module temperature and battery voltage. Incomfortable temperatures, current increase typically variesbetween 10 to 25%, with 30% or more easily achieved with adischarged battery and cooler temperatures. Bare wire connections under the PBR charge regulator terminal blocks areacceptable. Mid- and High-Current PBR models accept up to two #10gauge bare wire inputs under each terminal clamp.2. When the battery reaches the pre-set maximum voltage level at a giventemperature, the PV module input will be shorted (“shunted”) to a valuenear zero volts. The battery voltage will gradually drop back to a lower voltage,at which point the regulator will release the PV input, and chargingwill resume. At this time, the regulator input (module voltage) will be aboutone-half volt higher than the regulator output (battery voltage).3. There are no field adjustments. The “Shunt“ voltage level is factory set.1. Ensure that the photovoltaic array is properly wired to match the nominaloperating voltage of the regulator and battery system (usually 12, 24 or 48Vdc). Proper wiring diagrams for PV module/array can be obtained fromthe manufacturer or system designer.
