This MonthNews andEventsat EpiscopalMay 2006From the Head of SchoolHow should we assess a year in the life of our school? How can wetell how we are doing? The Education Committee of the Board of Trustees at Episcopalasks these questions, and there are always some numbers wecan review to give us an idea. We track our own admissions data—howmany inquired, how many applied, and how many chose to enroll? Wereview college admissions results—how many will enroll at the most competitive colleges anduniversities? We also study the success of the annual fund, we study our test scores, and wekeep a close eye on our budget.By these measures we are having a very good year. In college admissions, our seniors havedone very well—53 of 117 will matriculate to what our guidance office terms “most highlycompetitive” and “Tier 1+” institutions. The annual fund is running ahead of last year’s recordpace. We are keeping our SAT scores up, we had eight National Merit Finalists this year, andin May, 128 of our students will sit for 260 Advanced Placement exams. Finally, unless thereare some major surprises, we will complete the year with another balanced budget. We are doing fine by the numbers, but what is more interesting to me, and in some ways moretelling about the school, is to look at some of our individual students and to review a samplingof their collective accomplishments. You and every sports fan around the country know about the success of our boys’ basketballteam under the leadership of coach Dan Dougherty and All American captains WayneEllington and Gerald Henderson. However, did you know that we had 121 students receiveawards on the National Latin exam and 13 on the National Greek exam? Did you knowthat Devon 5th grader Karen Christianson won the national prize for best music compositionby a lower school student and that her piece was sung by our Devon Choir at the NationalAssociation for Music Education’s annual conference in Salt Lake City several weeks ago?Did you know that science teacher Andrea Zimmerman and four of her freshmen biologystudents worked with a school in Germany on an online project on illegal drug traffickingand presented their work at the National Association for Independent Schools annualconference in Boston in March? Did you know that senior trumpeter J.P. Galib was namedto the Philadelphia Regional Jazz Band, senior Michael Chang was named first chair cellistfor the Pennsylvania state orchestra, and junior John Trumbull won first prize in the 2006Singing City competition for young composers? Were you aware that eight Middle and UpperSchool students won awards at the Montgomery County language proficiency contest or thatour Middle School Model United Nations team won the best delegation award at the GeorgeWashington Conference on International Affairs? Did you know that 5th grader John Sailewon an essay contest about Ben Franklin sponsored by the National Constitution Center, senior Michele Thomas won a scholarship from African American Future Achievers, seniorMedha Khandelwal is a finalist in the Presidential Scholar competition, senior Sarah Steeleappeared in an episode of Law and Order, and 13 Devon students won the state physicalfitness prize…again! And lastly, Helena Cochrane, Upper School Chair of Modern Languages, took members of the Spanish Club to Sheridan Elementary School in North Philadelphia, PA.The club members brought books that they planned to read, in both Spanish and English, and donate to the first grade English as a Second Language class. The experience was such apositive experience that the Spanish Club hopes to continue their visits to Sheridan.StudentProfileMichelle Thomas ’06 accepteda certificate of achievement fromMcDonald’s ® Owner/Operator CleoAlston of Downingtown, PA, at the2006 Ronald McDonald HouseCharities ® /African American FutureAchievers Scholarship AwardsCelebration on February 28,2006, at the Hyatt Regency Penn’sLanding in Philadelphia. The program awarded 20 localhigh school students $1,000college scholarships for academicachievement and commitmentto the community. Academy NewsHead of School ContinuedThere is lots of good news to report and this list could goon and on. We continue to attract and develop studentswith exceptional skills. They come to us from all over thePhiladelphia region to learn and grow with our outstandingfaculty and to rub shoulders with other students of talent. There are always issues in a school, there are always placeswhere we can improve, and we will never be complacent, but on the whole, this has been an outstanding year for ourschool and I hope that we can finish up on a very positivenote.Editor’s Note: As this issue goes to press we have just learnedthat at their April 13th meeting, the Newtown TownshipPlanning Commission voted unanimously to move the finalland development plan for the Newtown Campus on to theBoard of Supervisors for final approval.Your Online PrivacyNew technologies have led to services that make yourpersonal information more publicly available. Sites such asGoogle Earth show satellite images of almost any location—including home addresses—on earth. While sites like this aregreat educational tools for cyber-touring the globe, they raisesome important safety and security concerns as well.A new service through Google allows you to enter a phonenumber in the search bar and view the address assigned tothe number. A click on Google Maps or MapQuest will giveyou a map of the location and directions to the home. Thisservice poses some obvious safety threats, particularly for ourchildren, having placed all registered phone numbers, andtherefore home addresses, in a globally public domain. You can remove your phone number from this service if youwish. To do this, follow these simple steps:-- Go to www.google.com.-- Type in your phone number in the search bar and click“Search.”-- When your home address comes up, click on the“Phonebook results for…” link.-- Click on the “Phonebook Removal Form” link andcomplete the online form.It is important to be aware of the risks associated with somenew tools that share private information in very public areas. If you have any questions about this issue, or any Internetsafety issues, contact Cathy Hall, Director of Technology, atchall@ea1785.org or 610-617-2225.Diversity and Community LifeOn Wednesday, May 10th from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., the Diversity andCommunity Life office will host its last parent meeting of the school year onthe Merion Campus. The last gathering in March began a two-part series onthe role stereotypes play in our lives, both individually and collectively. Thenext meeting will examine bias as manifest in the “snap judgments” we oftenmake. While many of us would like to believe that we are not prejudiced, scholars at Harvard University have created a test that provides powerfulevidence indicating that perhaps we all are. Assuming we accept the results, what can we do about it? Come and share as we take the Web version ofwhat is known as the “Implicit Association Test” and discuss the results. As always, these meetings are open to all EA parents. Diversity andCommunity Life Parent meetings are structured to provide a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment for parents to engage in open andhonest conversation about living and learning in a diverse community. Childcare will be provided. We hope to see you there!Seizing Opportunity: A Look atEpiscopal’s History...Come join alumni at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 6th, in Christ Chapelfor a panel discussion “Seizing Opportunity: A Look At Episcopal’s Historyof Determining Its Own Future From Philadelphia to Merion to NewtownSquare.” The panel, held during Alumni Weekend, will be moderated by GeeHeckscher ’56 and will include architects of the new campus, along with keymembers of the school community who were part of the decision-makingprocess to build the new campus.Athletic Schedule Changes OnlineLooking for the latest game cancellations for the day? AtLast, by Sandra Fenichel Asher, based on the play by Avi. A publicperformance will be held at 7:30p.m. on May 19th in the Theater onthe Merion Campus. What is love? That’s the questionEd Sitrow asks himself when hediscovers that his best friend, Pete Saltz, is in love with Anabell Stackpool, but is too shy to even look at her. When Ed discovers that timid Anabellfeels the same way about Pete, he and Lucy Neblit enlist their friends tohelp bring the lovesick pair together. They convince the principal to let themstage their own version of Romeo and Juliet, which they have been studyingin English class, and rig the casting so that Pete is Romeo and Anabell isJuliet. The plan seems like a perfect one, but lack of expertise; only twoweeks of rehearsal; leftover sets and costumes from previous shows; and aclassmate’s villainy threaten the production every step of the way. On theday of the performance, everything that can go wrong does. Yet, in spite ofeverything—or maybe because of it—true love triumphs in the end.Oklahoma! - A Success! The Upper School production of Oklahoma successfully appeared in frontof close to full houses at each performance. Over 60 of our Upper Schoolerscontributed to make it a wonderful theatrical event.Upper School Performs at Disney WorldThe Upper School Concert Choir, Vocal Ensemble, Concert Band, JazzCombo, and Chamber Orchestra performed in Walt Disney World as partof Magic Music Days Sunday, April 2-5, 2006.
