RALPH GILCHRIST&4311 FIRST NATIONAL IIAHK IIUILDINCJDI!!:TROJT, MICHIGANMarch 6, 1926.Mr. B. v. Wright,924 Bedell Building,Portland, Oregon.Dear B. V:REC£1VED __ !/!~_:-__~_!!_ __ .......,;.ANSWEIED'----------------·-RG:WReferring to your letter of Febr~ary 23rd, withfurther information of timber in Cow Creek district. While theseprices look cheap - that is a section of the State that I havenever been particularly interested in, and I would want to go intothe matter much further before even giving it conSideration. In regard to Shaw Brothers of Klamath Falls, wouldsay that the kind of a loan that they are suggesting I .do notbelieve would interest anyone back here. To do that it ia necessaryto have •ta~ding timber and the lean entirely ba~ed on that.'In regard to the pine beetle, think we should lookinto that matter closely again this coming sprint and watch ferany new damige. As far as llr. Kimball's programme is concerned,I believe that hia plan is only an expense, and while he is' probablydestroying a number of beetle a, yet I do not thi~k he can hope to ·accomplish m,uch because he is not .getting at the;real oause. Atone time he \endeavored to interest us in contrib~ting funds tohelp carry on .his campaign, but I did not feel like considering it.. I am glad to note that you are fo+lowing up thematter of cfeosoting timber and I am interested in what you sayabout fir, because this is the opposite of what i hav~ been givento understand by some of the engineers in this section. I would bepleased if you would get all the information you ·oan in regard tothis proposition, not that we are considering it; but just so thatwe may have it.In regard to the Canadian timber which you mention, Ido not believe that we would be interested in this. In this connectionwould say that some time when it is entirely convenient andyou have nothing else to do, I would like to have you drive up toVancouver Island and do some general scouting around there, so thatwe may know what is going on.

Mr. Gilchrist -2- 3-18-26The records ot t'ir treated piling and poles seem to be about o.saood as that of pine, so rar as the lo.sting quality of the ·treated tnaterW isconcerned.I belieTe the biggest trouble wJ.th the problem here is that the plontsE..re treating the wrong ol.aae or mterial, and try to do 1n the t1r, what no:praotioal operator \"tould try with long lee.t' pine - "Guarantee the depth or penetrationat r..ll points of the timber". For instance, ta.Je) a long laa.t heartbridge s~ 'lx16• and giTe it 12# troo.tnent, tu.ll cell process, you -.oul4 findfrom one a.nd one half to three inches penetra.tion on the edges, ~: .r.d from one-qua.rterto one-halt 1nch 1n the middle of the sides. A fir stringer would show a. Terys1miltl.l' result • roo.ybe slightly less :Penetro.tion, bu.t deeper from 1he euds of thestick. Here the orders come to the creosoting plant to put the oil in deeper 1nthe middle of the aides than ca...11 be done. This diff'1cu.lty wl.ll :tw.ve to be overe;omeby pu.tting in more experienced men to sell the treated r&l.teria.lJ and to educatethe con81.Uier to the fact that it is not nacessar-J to panetrc.~.te the· timber anydeepel' on the sides to get the desired result ,so far as the life of the timber iscone ern~.The ties that are treated here are all heart fir, pra.ct!ca.ll.r noheart ties of the long leaf pine are treated south, only for bridge constrw:rti on,and these are treated by the fUll cell process. It young fir trees on the Pac1f'ioCoast were cut into ties, lea.Ting a. l.a.rger proportion of sap on the tie, the penetrationill creosoting would cbe better. The plbnts out here perforate the ties on ~ll four sides so as tohelp get the oil into the wood. l think this a. mistake • as the sa.me slot th.:::.thelps get dee:per penetration or oil 1n the treatment • will help get mohture intothe tie after !t is in use. I am somewhat in do,lbt as to the a.d.Tanta.ge gotten 1ntreating ties a.a the plants are doing it here, since the ties being treated area.ll of a. long lived type, and the most d1f'f'1cult of' treatment • but am quite surethe..t the trao.tJ!J3nt of piling • telephone poles and timbers for open trestle work,1a a. auccess, and that the use of' creosote 1n this class of material will 1norea.se.1 hD.Te not yet had an opportunity to see the plant of' the UnionPaoif'1c at The Dv.llee or the Southern Pa.oif'io tie plo.nt south f'rom ~e, bu.tunderstand that they are both using either B1nc-chl.or1de or some other preserva.t1Te,RoweYer, I am told tb.a t they do uae creosote. RALPH GILCHRISTM3a P'I ... T NATIONAL UHIIIIUILDINGDETROIT, MICHJI'JANMarch 31. 1926.Mr. B. V. Wright.924 Bedell Building.Portland. Oregon.Dear B. V:I am just in receipt of your l etter of March 27th.advising that the seven Winnard claims, and also a claim insection 20. 25-11, will be put on the market this spring and willbe sold in a group. We want to get these claims, and do not by anychance want to lose -them to Shevlin-Hixon. I note--that you feelthat you will have the first opportunity, but that Shevlin-Hixonhave already offered more money than your price. While I have noway of knowing what their offer is. yet I rather imagine it somewherearound $2.25 per M. I would be glad to get these particularclaims at $2.50 per M. • which would make our price on the eightclaims $44,600. This would figure out about $35.00 an acre onour estimates. If this price won't get them I would go higher. ifnecessary. In the event you do have to go higher. I would suggestthat you get them tied up in a firm option ao that we will not beleft in the position of being pitted all the time against the otherfellow. This. however, I am going to leave with you as you are onthe ground and we are both agreed that on account of our situationwe want these particular claims badly. I trust. however. thatyou will be able to get them at arotind $2.50 basis.

Forinstance, the LaPine location might make available more timber toa plant than a location further south, but would require morerailroad construction in order to get the outlet to the SouthernPacific. In other words, I want to see us consider every angle andtake time enough when considering it so that our conclusions willbe as correct as possible.truly,RG:W

RALPH GILCHRISTM$11 nMT MATIOIIAL.w.NK IIUILDI ..._ DETROJT,MICHICIANJune 19, 1926.Mr. B. V. Wright,924 Bedell Building,Portland, Oregon.Dear B. V:Replying to your letter of June 11th, relativeto mill location, 24-9, I feel that it would probably be allright to pick up these jack pine lands along the river if theprice is cheap enough. I do not think they have value to anyoneexcept for the purpose that we would use them, and I do not seeas there would be anyone but ourselves interested in them. For this reason, I do not think that we are taking a great dealof chance in letting these lands rest until we can pick them upat what is a cheap price. Of course, if it were certain that wewere going to use them I would feel differently, but under thissituation I think that we can afford to let them rock along andonly buy in the event that we get a very reasonable price. In regard to the Winnard claims the same wouldnot be the case. There is timber on these lands which would bevery handy and blocks in with us, as. well as being on the river, and, as I have written you before, I don't want to see us losethese claims.I note in your letter of the 12th, what you sayrelative to the fire conditions in Central Oregon. I am alwaysnervous when this situation develops and have been inclined toemphasize the same to Haner, and have been inclined to encouragehim to forget to a great extent the expense when such conditionsare prevailing. I hope that you will watch this situation closelyuntil conditions improve. In regard to burning in our stuff out there, I havealways been in accord with Frank Dushau's opinion that it notonly kept the woods clean so that there .was less hazard from a bigfire, but also would help in the control of the beetle. Frank hadthis up with the Shevlin people at one time and they expressedthemselves to be of the same opinion, but we did find that theGovernment agents were not at all in accord with such a program.I think probably their ideas are all right if it were a case of

The article carries considerableweight because Mr. Kotcher's firm is one of theoldest and most reliable here in Detroit. For some reasonhe is particularly severe on Pondosa Pine, and it occurredto me that it might be well if you saw to it that thisarticle was placed in the hands of the secretary of theWestern Pine Association.RG:W
