RTD7ALRTD Temperature Sensor for Temperature measurement up to 900°F (482°C) inDivision 1 locations Installation InstructionsDescriptionThe RTD7AL temperature sensor is a three-wire platinum RTD(resistance temperature detector) typically used with monitoringand control systems when accurate temperature control isrequired. The sensor is explosion proof and approved for Division1 and 2 hazardous locations. The RTD7AL can be used with a widevariety of DigiTrace monitoring and control systems. These installation instructions detail the installation of theRTD7AL in conjunction with existing DigiTrace component kits.Tools Required• 3.5 mm flat-blade screwdriverAdditional Materials Required• Pipe strap• Conduit with 16–22 AWG shielded instrument cable or equivalentarmored cable3/4 in NPTconduitopening4.25 in.(108 mm)ApprovalsThe RTD7AL is CSA Certified for use in North America by themanufacturer for use in Division 1 and Division 2 hazardous locationsas follows:Kit ContentsClass I, Division 1, Groups C, DClass II, Division 1, Groups E, F, GClass I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, DClass II, Division 2, Groups E, F, G2 in. Wiring InformationThe length of RTD extension wires is determined by the wiregauge used.To reduce the likelihood that electrical noise will affecttemperature measurement, keep RTD extension wires as short aspossible.Use shielded instrument cable such as DigiTrace MONI-RTD-WIRE(22AWG, PVC insulation, –30°F to 140°F, –20°C to 60°C) or Belden83553 (22 AWG, FEP insulation, –95°F to 395°F, –70°C to 200°C).Maximum RTD extension wire lengthAWG Feet (meters)16 4500 (1400)18 2800 (880)20 1800 (550)22 1100 (340)RTD Direct ConnectionConduitdrainPipe strapPlace strap under heating cableC1D1 Installation with Heating CableElectrical Wiring Notes:Most electrical codes (such as NEC 725–15) permit Class 1 circuitsto occupy the same cable, enclosure, or raceway without regardto whether the individual circuits are alternating current or directcurrent, providing all conductors are insulated for the maximumvoltage of any conductors in the cable, enclosure or raceway.Additional Materials Required• Approved junction box (supplied by others)• HAK-C-100• Pipe strapPipe strapAgency approvedDiv 1 junction box(supplied by others)HAK-C-100Place pipe strap under heating cableDiv 2Div 1RTD7AL WiringConnect the wires as shown.1 Note: Ground RTD extension wire shield at oneend only, preferably at DigiTrace electronics end.2 Note: RTD housing must be properly groundedusing the screw provided.Electrical schematic of RTDWhiteRedField WiringWhite (Common return)Red (Source)RedRed (Compensate)WWW.THERMAL.PENTAIR.COMNORTH AMERICAEurope, Middle East, AfricaAsia PacificLatin AmericaTel: +1.800.545.6258Fax: +1.800.527.5703Tel: +1.650.216.1526Fax: +1.650.474.7711thermal.info@pentair.comTel: +32.16.213.511Fax: +32.16.213.603thermal.info@pentair.comTel: +86.21.2412.1688Fax: +86.21.5426.2917cn.thermal.info@pentair.comTel: +55.11.2588.1400Fax: +55.11.2588.1410thermal.info@pentair.comPentair and DigiTrace are owned by Pentair or its global affiliates.
