MARCH 2013 - Edition 26<strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong>’s Teaching, Training and Research Precinct concept drawing.CommunityConnectClinical Education Buildings launchWednesday, 20 FebruaryThe <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Clinical Education Buildings at BundooraExtended Care Centre, Broadmeadows <strong>Health</strong> Service andCraigieburn <strong>Health</strong> Service were officially launched by the HonTanya Plibersek, Federal Minister for <strong>Health</strong>, and the Hon DavidDavis, Victorian Minister for <strong>Health</strong>.The Clinical Education Buildings allow our students to learn with,from and about one another through unique programs specificallydesigned to train teamwork and collaboration skills as well as thetechnical skills each discipline needs.<strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Acting CEO, Robynne Cooke, said <strong>Northern</strong><strong>Health</strong> is equipping young health care professionals with theeducation they need to care for a growing northern community.“<strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> thanks the Commonwealth Department of<strong>Health</strong> and Ageing, <strong>Health</strong> Workforce Australia, the VictorianState Government and La Trobe University for their generouscontributions to this project,” said Ms Cooke.“All of our students learn how to work with a culturally diverseand varied community, with many patients who have complex andchronic health issues.“<strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> aims to provide high quality, innovativeeducational programs that will allow us to attract and develop thehigh performing workforce we need now and into the future.”Radio personality provides support tothe <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> FoundationRadio and television personality, Bruce Mansfield, has kindlyagreed to become an Ambassador for the <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong>Foundation, with a focus on the Foundation’s bequest program.Bruce has been worked within the media industry for over 50years, and has been involved with number of radio stations andtelevision programs during this time.Bruce is currently the host of 3AW’s Nightline and RememberWhen programs, along with co-host Phillip Brady.“My association with <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> goes back 16 years, when Iwas part of The <strong>Northern</strong> Hospital Fair. newsSporting atasty donationThe Craigieburn Sporting Club has continuedthe well established tradition of supporting<strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> and Craigieburn <strong>Health</strong>Service.The club recently donated $5,000 from theproceeds of their on-going parma promotion.For a number of years now, $1 from everychicken parma sold is donated.“We are proud to have the opportunity tosupport the Craigieburn <strong>Health</strong> Service andthe work they do for the community,” saidManager at Craigieburn Sporting Club, BobBurton.The ongoing generous support received fromthe Club will help <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> continueto deliver outstanding health care to thenorthern community.A gift of comfortThe Palliative Care Unit at Broadmeadows <strong>Health</strong> Service has recently purchasedten gel cushions with money received through in memory donations.Families who are grateful for the care and attention provided by the staff in thePalliative Care Unit choose to suggest donations in lieu of flowers at the funeral oftheir relative.The gel cushions provide a much greater level of comfort to patients by helping toprevent pressure injuries or minimise the discomfort of current injuries.John Doran, the Nurse Unit Manager of the Palliative Care Unit explains that theprevention of pressure injuries is a high priority with patients.“The cushions can be used for patient lounge chairs, allowing patients to sit out ofbed comfortably. northern health foundationLaunching the 2013 <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong>Foundation House and Land Charity AuctionOn 9 February, members of the local community joined<strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> in a family fun day to launch its 2013 Houseand Land Charity Auction at the Efficient Street Reserve,Aurora Estate.The celebration was a great day out with free barbeque, livemusic and kids’ activities including jumping castles and facepainting.“By hosting the family day and launch, the <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong>Foundation has again shown its support to helping provideoutstanding health care to the local community,” said RobynneCooke, <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Acting CEO.“The day celebrated the start of an exciting venture that willresult in the <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong> Foundation auctioning a threebedroom house located at 12 Efficient Street, Aurora Estate.“I would like to thank Places Victoria, Multicorp BuildingGroup, realtor Tony Delinaoum and local businesses for theirpartnership and generous donations towards the build.”Luciano Bongiorno, Operations Manager, Multicorp BuildingGroup said “We are always proud to build homes in our localcommunity and knowing proceeds will support our localhospital makes this venture even more worthwhile. It’s anopportunity for the company and myself to personally show ourappreciation.”Funds raised from the 2013 House and Land Charity Auctionwill go toward the construction of the Teaching, Trainingand Research Precinct at The <strong>Northern</strong> Hospital; which isa partnership between <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Health</strong>, the Universityof Melbourne, La Trobe University and the State andCommonwealth governments.This state of the art medical and training facility will provideup to 700 undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate studentplacements in the areas of medicine, nursing and a range ofallied health disciplines.“For the lucky home owners that secure this property in thefuture, it should be a comfort for them to know that their localhealth service is available to provide expert care to their family,close to home,” said Ms Cooke.4 Community CONNECT MARCH 2013
