Plain or Flowery Slippersby Sarah M. Hughesthe toe - if I trace around my foot on paper, thelength is 9 inches. My pattern, knit in the yarnand gauge I used, gives a slipper that stretchesto fit. If your foot is smaller, or if you use adifferent yarn, or have a differenttension/gauge, your slipper may be too small ortoo large.I would suggest that you either knit a tensionsquare (or even a rectangle) in garter stitch, and then measure the unstretched piece fromside to side (not cast on to bind off) and thenmeasure again the stretched size, andcompare the amount of stretch in your fabric, for the number of rows and stitches you have. This is a simple adult-sized slipper, worked in onepiece, and seamed. It can be left plain, oroptionally embellished with flowers, orwhatever takes your fancy!Yarn suggested: Bendigo Woollen Mills Classic12 PlyYarn weight: Bulky / 12 ply (7 wpi)Gauge: 5 sts and 5 rows per inch, in garterstitch, unstretched.Needle size: US 6 - 4.0 mmYardage: 130 - 150 yards (119 - 137 m)Sizes available: To fit foot 9 inches in lengthThis yarn is a bulky weight, crepe superwashwool (7wpi). Substitute as you require! You willwant something that's going to stretch a bit –my sample goes from 5 sts per inch to 3 stswhen stretched.Flowers require small amounts of red, brownand dark green yarn (or your own choice ofcolours). DPNs are needed for the(i-cord) leafstems if you choose to embellish with theprovided flower.Note on sizing: This pattern was written to fitfoot length of 9 inches. The slippers are knit tobe a relatively snug fit (stretching one to twoinches in length). For a smaller or larger foot, adjust CO up/down sts, and following rows asnoted (ignoring st counts).Since the pattern was originally written in 2008,I've had a few questions about sizing. As notedabove, the pattern was written for a 9 inch foot– my own! My foot is 9 inches from the heel toOr, you could just cast on - the sole of the footis worked first, and once that is done, youshould be able to compare it to your foot, tosee if it going to be OK. If it’s OK, you can keepgoing, otherwise, you can just treat the alreadyknit bit as your test, and determine how manyless stitches to cast on.You want to have to stretch an inch or so atleast, so that the slipper won’t fall off! If youryarn itself has no give (ie. it’s a single, or tightlyspun), then it might not work so well. The Bendigo Woollen Mills Classic 12ply yarn theoriginal slippers were knit fron is a crepe yarn, with some inherent stretch to it. I’ve made theslipper since in a semi-felted single, and analpaca blend - these obviously have lessstetch, so the slippers knit to the same size aremore slack - it they were being worn to bed orwalked around in a lot, I might put in someelastic around the opening to keep them inplace. :-)Abbreviations:CO: Cast on.K: KnitP: PurlK1fb: Knit into the front and back of the stitch(increasing one stitch).K2togtbl: Knit 2 together through the backloops (decreasing one stitch).
