Dear Reader,We are pleased to present the third volume <strong>of</strong> the BerkeleyStudent Journal <strong>of</strong> <strong>Asian</strong> <strong>Studies</strong>. The journal developed as an effortto provide a forum to showcase, connect, and enrich youngscholars studying issues related to Asia at <strong>UC</strong> Berkeley.In this volume, Valerie Black uses metaphor to explore thestatus <strong>of</strong> the Ainu in Japan, as well as the relationship <strong>of</strong> metaphorto perception. Robert Bowers Curl examines some unique characteristics<strong>of</strong> Japanese Buddhism as it shifted away from a TheravadaBuddhist model towards a Newar Buddhist model. Rachel Phoalooks at the role environmental non-governmental organizationsplayed under the regime <strong>of</strong> Suharto in Indonesia as a result <strong>of</strong>international pressure and environmental damage. Mark Portillouses photography as a tool to analyze how a government garnerspower and uses that power to create cultural memory, specificallyregarding the Vietnam War. Ramanathan Veerappan sheds lighton the themes found in the ancient Indian text Arthashastra byKautilya, its relevance to modern institutions, as well as the text’seconomic and political strategies echoed in later Western schools<strong>of</strong> thought. Kankan Xie looks at the role <strong>of</strong> ethnicity in China andMalaysia’s bilateral relationship, and its impact on politics andeconomics.The journal strives to serve as a platform to encourage theemergence <strong>of</strong> student scholarship on Asia.
