The session will explore what modern geologic and analytical geochemistry studies are learning about porphyry deposits. Presentations will examine factors that form porphyry deposits, such as sources of metals and fluids, length of magmatism and hydrothermal activity, wall-rock alteration and veins, regional geology, and tectonics (Butte, Montana); geology of current exploration areas in east Asia and South America, and environmental geology and geochemistry of acid-mine waters related to the Butte superfund site. Previous employment has included work for Inco, Rio Algom, and Battle Mountain Canada. Terence has 40 years of experience working in various terranes around the world. ODIN D. CHRISTENSEN (SEG 1982 F) was appointed director of CMQ Resources. PETER J. DOYLE (SEG 1996) was appointed by Troy Resources NL to the position of Exploration and Business Development Manager. LINDSAY B. GILLIGAN (SEG 1997) has been appointed Director, Geological Survey of New South Wales, based in Maitland, New South Wales, Australia. TOMAS M. GUERRERO (SEG 1997 F) has been appointed director with Fortuna Minerals. STEPHEN JURAS (SEG 1979) was appointed manager of geology for Eldorado Gold. Prior to joining Eldorado, Stephen was chief geologist with AMEC Americas. JAMES B. LINCOLN (SEG 1989 F) has been named vice president of corporate development for Jinshan Gold Mines. THOMAS K. MANCUSO (SEG 1985) has been named president of a three-way merger of Reno-based Western Goldfields Inc., TSX venture-listed Romarco Minerals Inc., and Colorado-based US Gold Corp. Thomas has been chief executive of Western Goldfields. BORDEN PUTNAM III (SEG 1980 F) was appointed director for Eurasian Minerals. MICHAEL B. SKEAD (SEG 2005) has been promoted to vice president-exploration by Banro Corp. Michael was previously exploration manager at Banro. He will be responsible for directing gold exploration activities in the Democratic Republic of Congo. DON R. TAYLOR (SEG 1982 F) has been appointed vice president of exploration for Doe Run Co. RODNEY N. THOMAS (SEG 1993), formerly vice president, exploration, with Diadem Resources Ltd., was promoted to the position of president, CEO, and director of the company. Previous employment included work with BHP Minerals Canada Ltd., Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation, and Urangesellschaft Canada Ltd. ROBIN S. TOLBERT (SEG 2001) has resigned as vice president of exploration for Ross River Minerals. AWARDS & ACCOMPLISHMENTS Many Thanks, Jeremy! JEREMY P. RICHARDS (SEG 1985 F), who has served as technical editor of the SEG Newsletter since April 2003, announced that he will be stepping down from the volunteer position after the current issue. His responsibilities have included soliciting, selecting, and reviewing feature articles, as well as shepherding them through additional peer review. He has also been responsible for the Economic Geology Commentary column. The Society appreciates the many hours Jeremy devoted to seeking out interesting work for publication and will miss his scrupulous editing and oversight. We thank him for his commitment and wish him well! Farewell to Long-Time SEG Staffer JEAN THOMS, first employed by SEG in the early 1990s, retired from her position as Head of Subscription Services in August. Jean's contribution to the growth of the Society over 13 years was enormous and we all owe her a great debt of gratitude. We wish her well in her retirement. 2005 Mining Hall Inductee CHARLES MEYER (1915–1987) has been inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame. Born September 30, 1915, in St. Louis, Missouri, Charles received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Washington University, and a master’s in geology from Harvard, where he studied under L.C. Graton and Donald H. McLaughlin. He took a position as research geologist with Anaconda Copper Mining Company, working under chief geologist Reno H. Sales, with whom he studied the mineralization of the district around Butte, Montana. The outgrowth of the study, involving an analysis of mineralogy and ore controls with laboratory support, was a detailing of the process of ore formation and its effect on wall rocks. Based on the work, Charles was awarded a Ph.D. by Harvard in 1950. In 1953, Charles joined the University of California at Berkeley. He retired to Sedona, Arizona, in 1982, becoming an adjunct professor at the University of Arizona. A dedicated member of SEG, Charles was named President of the Society in 1971, and received the SEG Penrose Gold Medal in 1982. Sam Adams to Receive AGI Award SAMUEL S. ADAMS (SEG 1975 F) is the 2005 American Geological Institute (AGI) Medalist in Memory of Ian Campbell. This award is presented to a geoscience professional in recognition of singular performance in and contributions to the profession of geology. Campbell had remarkable accomplishments that gave him widespread influence in the geosciences. AGI’s Medal in Memory of Ian Campbell is the Institute’s most distinguished award. Sam received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Dartmouth College and his Ph.D. from Harvard University in economic geology. Following graduation, Adams worked for the International Minerals and Chemical Corporation in New Mexico, and then was named chief geologist at Anaconda Company. In 1986, Sam was made chair of the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering at Colorado School of Mines. After five years of working with students, faculty and staff, Adams returned to New Hampshire to run the Loon Mountain Recreation Corporation, the state’s largest ski and summer resort. A former president of the Society of Economic Geologists, and most recently, chair of the SEG Publications Board, Sam has served the SEG in many capacities. The award, the most recent of many, will be presented to Sam at the GSA Presidential Awards on October 15 in Salt Lake City, Utah. DEATHS G. CHRISTIAN AMSTUTZ (SEG 1955 SF) died June 23, 2005, in Switzerland. He had retired as a professor at the University of Heidelberg and was a 50-year member of the SEG at the time of his death. WILLIAM C. GUSSOW (SEG 1951 SF) died August 20, 2005, in Ontario, Canada. He was 97 years old. No additional information is available. ANNOUNCEMENTS
