ABOUT THE PROGRAMMECounsellors have a unique opportunity to create a rewarding career helping others gain a higher levelof fulfilment in their lives. Our <strong>Certificate</strong> in <strong>Guidance</strong> and <strong>Counselling</strong> course is an excellent courserecognised for its contribution to the counselling industry and will provide you with an platform onwhich to pursue your career in counselling.With discussion and role-play, students are expected to enhance their self-knowledge and awareness,allowing themselves to be impacted by the different topics and sharing their reactions. Through suchexchanges, it is hoped that students will think critically about their own issues in becoming counsellorsand gain a perspective on what they, as individuals, bring to the counselling relationship.The class format will include lectures, discussion, audio-visual presentations and experiential activities.Students are responsible for participating in class discussions, as reading assignments a n dmaterial presented by the course tutor are viewed as starting points for an exchange of ideas ratherthan material to be fed back through an examination system.WHO IS THIS PROGRAMME FOR?The <strong>Certificate</strong> targets persons who wish to acquire basic counselling skills for use in a variety ofplaces such as:Work EnvironmentYouth OrganisationsHealth FacilitiesEducational <strong>In</strong>stitutionsChurchesPrisonsSocial Welfare DepartmentsCommunity GroupsIt is specifically designed for persons with little or no formal training in <strong>Counselling</strong> but who intend topursue a career path in <strong>Guidance</strong> and <strong>Counselling</strong> or a related field. Students completing the threemodules presented as part of the course will be well placed to advance their career in the field of<strong>Guidance</strong> and <strong>Counselling</strong>.PROGRAMME STRUCTUREThe course is delivered over three semesters—September to December, January to April,and May to July; with each semester covering one of the three modules as set out below:Semester 1 <strong>Counselling</strong> Process & Skills September to DecemberSemester 2 Theories of <strong>Counselling</strong> January to AprilSemester 3 Contemporary issues in <strong>Counselling</strong> May to JulyThe University requires students to have 135 contact hours comprising 45 sessions each of which has a durationof an average 3 hours.WHEN WILL IT START?The programme commences at the beginning of the new academic year.PROGRAMME COSTThe cost of the programme is EC$2,500. This includes materials, examinations and administrative fees.HOW TO APPLYApplication forms can be collected from UWI <strong>Open</strong> <strong>Campus</strong> main Office between the hours of 8:30 am to 4:30pm. Application forms MUST be returned to the <strong>Open</strong> <strong>Campus</strong> upon completion along with the following supportingdocuments:Birth <strong>Certificate</strong>Academic <strong>Certificate</strong>s/grade slipsProfessional <strong>Certificate</strong>s/diplomasMarriage <strong>Certificate</strong> if necessary—i.e. if the present name is differentfrom that on documents.TEACHING COMMENCES: SEPTEMBERCOURSE DURATION: 1 Academic YEAR
