Receive Authorization to re-enter the building fromthe Authority Having Jurisdiction, and internalCompany Management.Items to observe:ü Ensure there are no fires.ü No water greater than 2 inches.ü Are there odors in or around the building thatcould be from gas or hazardous chemicals orfrom the neighboring building?ü Are there obvious safety hazards visible thatcannot be abated? (Such as power, missingwalking or working surfaces, etc.)ü If the building environment is not consideredsafe, evacuate and have the conditionevaluated.At least two employees are available to assess thedamage.Entrants on the assessment team must have theappropriate Personal Protective Equipment for thehazards.If there are any doubts about the safety of thefacility, do not enter!2. Inspect the building gas shut –off valve after anearthquake. Make sure that gas sources are notleaking or are shut off at the meter.3. Inspect the battery rooms to ensure no batterystrings were knocked over causing acid leaks. (Ifapplicable.)4. Inspect the generator room to ensure no diesel fuelleaks are inside the room. (If applicable.)5. Ensure that there are working fire suppressiondevices (gaseous fire suppression, sprinklers) andworking fire alarms. Check all fire control panels fortrouble indicators. Check to see if the connection tothe monitoring station outside the buildingoperates.6. Have a qualified person inspect the commercialpower, DC, UPS room, or panels for any possibilityof arcing or shorts from the equipment.7. Start securing any windows, doors, or otherstructural holes that can be considered as security,safety, or environmental concerns.Cover any areas exposed to the weather, theswitch room, control room, and office areas ofpriority.9. Contact an emergency restoration company forclean up of the building.Water intrusion should be a concern for immediateclean-up to avoid mold growth.10. Ensure that employees working have appropriatepersonal protective equipment: gloves, boots, hardhats, etc. Flood water exposure may requiretetanus shots.Date /Time ActionInitiatedDate/Time ActionCompleteNote: Although the site may not be operational, there are still a number of logistic and status reporting functions thatmay require attention from others in the company.11. Assign at least one person (probably more) tomaintain communications and answer incomingtelephone calls. Be sure to maintain a log ofremote employees’ location at all times and workactivities. This will allow for an accounting ofemployees in severe weather or continuation of thenatural hazard event.12. Start assessing the need for additional outsidesupport from spare parts to water, food, rentalradios, additional wireless phones, computerrentals, vehicle rentals, software, contractors, etc.13.
