Since <strong>the</strong> current managers ofwildlife in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sahtu</strong> settlement area (DRR, DFO, DOE) do not conduct wildlife research at a levelsufficient to provide <strong>the</strong> type <strong>and</strong> amount of in<strong>for</strong>mation it is anticipated that <strong>the</strong> Board will require, ithas been agreed to establish a Wildlife Studies Fund.- The government departments with management responsibilities will continue to conduct <strong>the</strong>ir currentlevel of wildlife research in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sahtu</strong> settlement area <strong>and</strong> will keep <strong>the</strong> Board in<strong>for</strong>med of <strong>the</strong>research projects being conducted, <strong>and</strong> those planned.- The Board will not fund research which would duplicate research conducted by governmentdepartments.- When considering granting contracts, <strong>the</strong> Board will apply <strong>the</strong> same criteria to all proposals.- When considering <strong>the</strong> funding of research projects, <strong>the</strong> Board may include both personnel <strong>and</strong>operational costs.SAHTU IMPLEMENTATION PLAN 47
