ANNEX AProject 26 - 10:Project Manager:Participant/Liaison:Recognition of traditional Sahtu Dene and Metis names for geographic featuresGovernment of the Northwest Territories (GNWT)Sahtu Tribal Council, (STC) CanadaObligations Addressed:26.3.1 The participants have traditionally referred to lakes, rivers, mountains and other geographicfeatures and locations in the settlement area by traditional or aboriginal names. Upon requestof the Sahtu Tribal Council, the official name of such a place shall be reviewed and thetraditional name used by the participants may be recognized in accordance with the applicablegovernment procedures and policies including the toponymic policy of the Government of theNorthwest Territories.ACTIVITIES RESPONSIBILITY TIMING GUIDELINES(in sequence)1. Request a review of an official name of a STC after settlementgeographic featurelegislation2. Review request in accordance with policies GNWTand procedures3. Conduct local consultation GNWT4. Make a decision and, if favourable, forward GNWTthe recommended name change to ExecutiveCouncil5. Accept or reject recommendation Executive Council6.
