Yes! I Am NormalBy Shoshanna EaslingThis is Shoshanna here, the youngest of the five Pearl kids. My husbandJames and I own The Bulk Herb Store. Lately we have gotten a lot of e-mailsfrom our customers who have begun to figure out that I am indeed one of thePearl kids. Most think it’s great, but several really hate the fact that a grown upPearl kid might actually love God and be healthy, wealthy, and wise.First email:Hi, I have been to your BulkHerbStore web site and I have to tell you it isAwesome!! I was wondering if you are related to The Pearls....I love Mrs. Debi’sHelp Meet book and my hubby has all kinds of CDs from Bro. Pearl. Excuse myboldness if you are not this girl. You still are doing wonders with the life God hasgiven to you. ~ Missionaries to Italy, Kerri Spicer6 www.nogreaterjoy.org | 1-866-292-9936

Second email:Shoshanna,Is your mom the same Debi Pearl of No Greater Joy Ministries? If so, I mustconfess to being a little floored by the type of person you are! So spunky, confidentand even a great dresser! These are not the traits of a young lady that comesfrom a home that is supposedly harsh, restrictive, and legalistic (according tothe negative reviews)! I imagined all of the Pearl girls to be awkward and shy. Itwould do me good to know if you are their daughter! ~ MichelleThird email:Shoshanna, Is it true your parents are the same people that wrote the book ToTrain Up a Child? You seem so nice and normal, and yet after reading a short partof that book I was vomiting! How can anyone with a conscience behave like suchmonsters? They are akin to the lowest of low and in my opinion need to be shot. Ifeel sorry for you and pray you don’t raise your child in the same manner! ~ JaneIIt’s true. I am Mike and DebiPearl’s youngest daughter. My nameis Shoshanna Rashell (Pearl) Easlingand I am writing this to set the recordstraight. Over the years many peoplehave commented on how surprisedthey were at how “normal” my siblingsand I are. This makes me laugh! Some people think because wegrew up with parents who spanked uswhen we misbehaved that we shouldbe emotionally scarred, sociallycrippled, broken spirited, withdrawn, and so on. Boy, are they wrong! Me,broken spirited? HA! No one that hasever known me would think such athing. Our parents raised us to be spirited, creative, confident, successful, and funny. To top it off, I am a gogetterkind of gal (check out Mom’sPreparing book). My parents did notraise any spiritual clones! And none ofus ever went through a time of rebellionagainst God or our parents.I am 27 years old and married toa wonderful man, James. Everywherewe go heads turn to check him out.Yes, he is handsome, but what catchespeople’s attention is the giggling babygirl in his arms, our five-year-old littlerascal of a boy smiling mischievouslywhile holding his daddy’s hand, andhis glowing wife who obviously thinkshe is super. We are blessed, and Godis so good! I could go on and on aboutmy amazing husband and my awesomelife, but that is another article. Iwant to tell you how life was growingup in the Pearl house.I felt like a rich princess raisedon sunshine and love. When I was a girl in pigtails,my mother taught me how to makebiscuits. My dad trained me how tokeep my stray hair out of the biscuits. Iwill never forget the day at the dinnertable when Dad pulled a two-foot-longhair (three-quarters swallowed) out ofhis mouth. We laughed, gagged withhim, and got a good story that day. Weworked hard and played even harder. Most of my memories are at the creekswimming, lying in the sun, swingingoff the rope, riding my horse, andbuilding clubhouses.I was well-trained, so I did notget many spankings, but I was a wildchild, and there were times that Ineeded one. I remember that spankingswere like, “what goes up, mustcome down.” If you are bad, you getspanked. No emotional drama, no anger,no loud voices; none of that stuffwww.nogreaterjoy.org | 1-866-292-9936 7

My dad and mom never raisedtheir voices at each other or at us. Ilook back at my life in the Pearl houseand I thank God I grew up there. I amso blessed to have such amazing parents. The more people I meet, the moreI get to know, the more I realize howincredible my childhood was.We never had any money growingup. This Letter Made My Day! - MikeI Knew That I KnewDear Michael,I have been reading or listening toyou since about 1995. I have listenedto all of your material--some morethan once. Last month, I skied down amountain in Utah listening to you teachthe book of Revelation. I travel in mywork so I have a lot of time to listen.I grew up in a Church of Christand believed a lot of false doctrineuntil I was 26. I knew I was missingsomething, so I began my journey ofsearching. I knew God could save me,yet I knew I was not saved. I read andlistened to so many different people. Iread my Bible. I searched. I knocked.I would not give up. I listened to yourteachings on Romans, Galatians, andMatthew, but I just could not get savedto save my life.On Sunday, January 23, 2011, Ipicked up your Repentance book andstarted reading it. I had purchased ityears ago but had never read it. AsI read, I really started soaking it in.I could tell something was buildinginside me. Each page was like a cliffhanger. I had to turn the next page tosee what would happen next. I finallyunderstood this lifelong mystery. I wasin a weird state of mind, but a goodone. I went to sleep that night not havingfinished reading the book. I justEach page was likea cliff hanger. The Job of a LifetimeBy Nathan PearlIt is not about you or your abilities. It is about your willingness.Did you know that God gaveeach believer a life-long job? That’sright! Christ said in Mark 16:15,“And he said unto them, Go ye intoall the world, and preach the gospelto every creature.”We have a mission. Male orfemale, child or grandparent, YOUhave a mission. What are you going to do about it?God tells us the story of a lifelongjob he had for a man namedMoses: being a leader to millionsof people. One day Moses was walking ona hill with his father-in-law’s sheepwhen he saw a burning bush thatjust kept burning. This was curious.Moses stopped to take a look, andsuddenly the voice of God came outof the bush and told Moses that it wasGod speaking to him, so he needed totake his shoes off and listen carefully.“I have surely seen the afflictionof my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reasonof their taskmasters; for I know theirsorrows; And I am come down todeliver them out of the hand of theEgyptians, Come now therefore, andI will send thee unto Pharaoh, thatthou mayest bring forth my peoplethe children of Israel out of Egypt.”Even though this was the voiceof God speaking to him through abush, the only thing Moses couldsay was, “I can’t do that! I stutter; Ican’t be a speaker. You must have thewrong guy.”Three different times God spoketo Moses of his lifetime job, and eachtime Moses had an excuse for whyhe was not the right choice. FinallyMoses accepted his mission and didall the LORD told him to do.God needed a man who had aheart to love and honor him. Heneeded a man who would turn to Godin prayer, asking what he should do.Moses could use others to help him,but the leadership of Israel needed tobe from a man who would seek God’sface.Fast forward thousands of yearsto the time when Jesus was giving allthose who love him his final instructions:“Thus it is written, and thus itbehoved Christ to suffer, and to risefrom the dead the third day: Andthat repentance and remission ofsins should be preached in his nameamong all nations, beginning at Jerusalem”(Luke 24:46-47).Jesus has given all of us lifetimejobs.Jesus, the beloved Son of God,suffered the indignity of death toredeem us. Then he gave us our jobof a lifetime, “TELL everyone aboutJesus.”It is not about your abilities. It isabout your willingness.12 www.nogreaterjoy.org | 1-866-292-9936

Mexico MissionsA Letter From the Richardson FamilyMike Richardson is the father often children whose ages rangefrom 34 to 2. He has been a missionaryfor nearly eighteen years. He is also a pastor, a conferencespeaker, an author, publishes theSpanish homeschool magazineEl Hogar Educador, publishesbooks, CDs, DVDs in Spanish forthe family, and organizes five regionaland national home schoolconferences in Mexico.IIn November I made a decision thatwould radically change my outlook, life, and ministry. I have witnessedheartbreak, fear, and terror, yet I havealso experienced a powerful God workingthough his people in the midst ofdire circumstances. In February the drug traffickersand gangs inundated four major citieswith violence—bombings, shootouts, blockades, looting, destruction, andkillings. The message was clear: we canisolate a city and its people wheneverand wherever we desire.Isolation, fear, uncertainty, and violenceare causing a significant changein the Mexican culture. In Mexico thefamily is very important. However, large family gatherings are no longerthe norm. Its citizens are no longer free. They are searching for answers. “Whathappens next?” “What happens afterthis life?”God is opening doors for me tomeet with mayors, city officials, and14 www.nogreaterjoy.org | 1-866-292-9936

even soldiers at the heavily guardedcheckpoints. They are fighting, andin some cases dying, so that I can livein peace. Yet few are reaching out tothem—to equip them for eternity. There was a time that I desiredto live to be a ripe old age. Now thatinward, unspoken fear of shortening mylife is gone. I can freely go forth andboldly proclaim the Word of God tothose in need. This realization has notonly impacted my preaching but hasalso changed how I am reaching others. Many have heard about the Americanmissionary’s wife that was recentlymurdered in Mexico. Many have pitiedthis family and the sacrifice they madefor the Gospel. Never pity a missionary—thosewho go to fulfill Christ’scommand to preach the Word. We arewhere the real action is—where Godis working in the hearts and lives ofmen. We are living where life and deathconverge; where sin and grace cometogether; where Heaven and Hell arein a fierce battle for the souls of men, where a living God is working his willin men’s lives. After writing the above paragraph,I was driving near Ciudad Mier; threemen forced me off the road and out ofmy truck.I had made a conscious decision tobe in a dangerous area. Now, with onlya few seconds to decide, what do I do?Stay and submit, or cut and run? Will Ilive or die? Will the church stand in thegap for my wife and kids?I stopped and exited the truck. Theyinterrogated me. Why I was there? WhatI was carrying? They inspected my vehicle.I was not scared—perhaps anxiousor apprehensive. They released me. I could leave. When they turned toward their car, Icalled out, “You have talked to me, nowI want to talk to you.” They turned andI began sharing the Gospel. The leaderasked if I was a Christian. Then headded, “My wife is a Christian.”As they were leaving I told themthat I had written a booklet especiallyfor people like them but that I hadjust given out the last copy. So I said,“Please stop me again so that I can giveyou a copy.”They left.I went home and printed an additional5,000 copies of the booklet.I have always said that I would bewilling to give my life for the cause ofChrist. It is easy to SAY that. It is evenrelatively easy to go where there isdanger, believing that God will protectyou. But it is a powerfully emotionalissue to actually go where the one whowent before you really did lay downhis life.Death alone will stop to my effort toreach Mexican families for Jesus. Some may say that my plans are toobig—that I am just one man. But if theGospel is true, if there is a heaven anda hell, if the eternal destination of menis on the line, then my plans are not toobig, they are too small.Read the full story at: www.NoGreaterJoy.org/ministrypageWays You Can HelpPray: Pray fervently—pray passionately.Write or email: Missionaries need to know that theyare not standing alone.Make a Difference: Four hours after I was stopped, Ireceived an email saying, “I have been praying for you.”For more information contact Vida Nueva Ministries 1001 South 10th St.,Suite G-529, McAllen, TX 78501 USA, or vnm@hughes.netwww.nogreaterjoy.org | 1-866-292-9936 15

Angry ChildrenBy Michael PearlWhat causes children to be angry, and how can parentsaddress this issue? We can best understand anger inchildren by understanding the sourceof our own anger. Children get angryfor the same reasons adults do. Thelittle ones do appear to have more ofa problem with anger than do adults, but only because the young ones havenot yet developed the self-serving artof covering their feelings and appearingproper to others. Most of ushave too much pride to display ouranger publicly, so we express angerthrough punishing silences or quietbiting words. Innuendoes designed tomarginalize others are the polishedart of anger. We try to castigate whilemaintaining the appearance of emotionalaloofness, the object being toprovoke the detested party to react inself-incriminating ways, openly confirmingour assessment of their faults.Anger has several roots, which wewill discuss in the future online, butthe taproot of all anger is frustrationat failing to manage our environmentfor our own pleasure. I have seenno less than a thousand men expressanger at inanimate objects and cursethings that do not have ears becausethey were frustrated in their efforts toaccomplish something with a “stubborn”tool. How many times have we observedtoddlers cry out in anger attheir failure to manipulate an objectto their satisfaction? A ten-year-old16 www.nogreaterjoy.org | 1-866-292-9936

slams a ball glove on the ground afterfailing to catch the ball. Or he yells inanger, “That stupid old bicycle won’twork right.”And there is the anger directed atothers when a child fails to manageothers to his own pleasure. A childexplodes, “But you promised youwould take me to the ball game today.”A ten-year-old girl angrily cries,“Somebody has been in my room andtouched my stuff.” A fifteen-year-oldgirl whines in anger, “Why can’t Ihave a cell phone; all my friends do!”And ultimately, the words we neverwant to hear, “I just hate you; whydid I have to have parents like you?”What is wrong with her parents? Theyhave frustrated her efforts to “expressherself,” to experience life as shethinks best.Anger is the bulldozer of thefrustrated soul. If an angry man werehonest, you would hear him say, “Getout of my way; you are preventingme from realizing immediate gratification.”Angry drivers are a primeexample of the fruit of frustration.Anger runs even deeper. It becomesan IED —improvised explosivedevice. “You have hurt me; Iwill hurt you back in the only waythat is available to me.” “I will shoutat you as my enemy, and you willsee the murder in my heart and beafraid. You will back down and giveme my way, for ‘I am the master ofmy fate and captain of my soul.’” Beit a skinhead in prison or the twoyear-oldson of a stable family, angeremanates from the human race likeodor from a skunk. When you see anger in yourchildren, you are seeing the theologyof depravity up close in all of itspervading ugliness. But children donot inherit Adam’s anger. There is noneed, for they are quite capable ofinventing it in a vacuum. Some are more angry than others.Children range from very angry tohardly angry at all. Some childrenspend their early years in calm congeniality, and then all of a sudden turnangry. Others express lots of anger intheir early years from birth to three orfour years old, and then calm downand become peaceful and passive. What is going on that creates thesevariables? Can we as parents controlthe process, thwart the growth ofAnger is the bulldozer of thefrustrated soul.anger, and instill a godly self-controland forgiveness in our children? Theanswer is a resounding “Yes.”As a parent you must anticipatethe needs of your children and be proactivein equipping them to face life’schallenges with the kind of characterit takes to endure with grace thepotential frustrations of everyday life. How? First by example. If you bypassthis one, nothing else will work. Ifyou have occasional angry outbursts, your children will catch it like the flu.It does no good to say you are sorry, other than they may learn to apologizeafter each of their own outbursts. You have not dealt with the anger;you have just made the point that itneeds to be followed with an apology.More is caught than taught.Assuming you are setting aproper example, the next step is to notleave your child in a social vacuumwhere she must face her frustrationsunguided. For example, I saw a smallchild cry out in anger because shecouldn’t put her coat on properly. Shewas frustrated. If you simply spankher for her anger or rebuke her, youwill only increase the frustration andit will soon develop into a habit of angryimpatience. You can prevent thiswww.nogreaterjoy.org | 1-866-292-9936 17

(Teach your child) that thethings that frustrate us can beconquered with patience andpersistence.inclination by patiently training herin the art of putting on a coat. Whenyou see the anger, slow down in yourhurry to get out the door and showher that you are going to patiently bethere while she finds the other sleeve. If she is capable of this contortionist’sfeat but overly anxious and impatientwith herself, show her step by stephow it is to be done, and smile all thewhile. You are teaching her that thethings that frustrate us can be conqueredwith patience and persistence. In the child’s mind, this translates intoa principle that will apply in the faceof any frustration. If a ten-year-old is angry at hisbicycle because it won’t work right, take time to show him how to make itwork properly. Get out the tools andmake adjustments, or teach him howto adjust his riding technique, as theneed may be.Some anger is justified, but it isa slippery slope. I recently observedone of my grandkids sitting in front ofan easel, studiously painting a picture. At three years old she is very seriousabout her artwork and quite patientwith the process. But she burst out inanger when a visiting kid deliberatelyand physically halted her painting.I could see that she just wanted tobe left alone so she could paint. Heranger was understandable but unacceptable. Now her mother could haverebuked her for being angry, but thatwould have introduced another elementthat would have broadened heranger to include her mother and thecruel, insensitive world in general. The budding artist was not tryingto enforce her will upon others ormanipulate others to her pleasure. She had created an environment thatshe wanted to maintain, and othershad trespassed. What she neededwas what we all need when someonecomes onto our property and abusesour possessions—the law, an enforcer.A society becomes angry, giving wayto revolution when the law no longerprotects it and it feels there is no otherrecourse to achieve justice. It is drivenmad with the frustration of injustice. Some anger is justified, but itis a slippery slope. So, seeing the event unfold, I saidto my busy daughter who didn’t seewhat took place, “They are disturbingher painting; they should play someplaceelse and leave her alone.” Thethree-year-old had already returned toher canvas and was deep in concentration, working tediously.Anger is a natural human emotionand not necessarily evil in itself. Theapostle Paul said, “Be ye angry, andsin not: let not the sun go down uponyour wrath” (Ephesians 4:26). Justifiedanger should fade quickly withthe removal of the provocation. Donot entertain the grievance overnight. If the anger lingers until nightfall it isno longer a natural reaction to injustice;it is simmering wrath.Did you know that Jesus wasangry? Read Mark 3:1-6. When Jesuswas confronted with the blind manon the Sabbath, he saw the religiousleaders watching him “whether hewould heal him on the sabbath day;that they might accuse him” Jesus“looked round about on them withanger, being grieved for the hardnessof their hearts, he saith unto theman, Stretch forth thine hand. Andhe stretched it out: and his hand wasrestored whole as the other.” His frus-18 www.nogreaterjoy.org | 1-866-292-9936

Her spirit will bequieted by the justice that is enforced, and she will “not let the sun go down”on her wrath. However, if Mother had leftthe children to themselves, anarchywould have ensued. Laila would havelost it and fought to gain control ofher environment. If she prevailed,it would have confirmed to her thepower of anger and aggression. Ifshe had failed and the other childrenprevailed to stymie her art work, she would have grown even moreangry and hostile, acting in retaliation, maybe even striking the otherAnger is a natural humanemotion and not necessarilyevil in itself.kids or screaming insults. All that isunholy would break loose, and Lailawould have looked like the “bad girl”while the others just stood aroundinnocently grinning, leaving Laila tobe rebuked and spanked for her outof-controlanger. If this situation hadbeen allowed to reach this point, therewould have been no way to untanglethe knots of anger that would haveformed in her little soul. No amountof spanking would have rooted out herfeelings of injustice. The house was full of cousins andfriends. One of the games was pinthe tail on the donkey, played whileblindfolded of course. Laithe was thefirst to give it a try. When he pulledthe blindfold off and found that thetail was hanging in the air a long wayfrom the donkey, he rushed over tocorrect his mistake. He is a perfectionistand likes everything in order. Thattail hanging in the air was totally outChildren need to be taught therules and trained to navigate thecourt and disciplined in mindand body before they are exposedto the challenges of the game.of order. When he tried to repin it, weall laughed, and his mother placedit back were he had placed it whileblindfolded. He said no and struggledto get hold of it so he could give thepoor donkey his tail. When his motherlaughingly resisted, trying to explainthat there was a prize for the one whogot closest, he just fell on the floorand wept his frustration and anger. Hismother was wise and let him return thesevered tail to the humiliated donkey. Most of the kids were older than heand understood the need to change therules to accommodate hisperspective. To have resisted himhere and spanked himfor his crying wouldnot have appeared justto his little mind andwould have left him withbudding seeds of distrustand anger. Spankings arereserved for rebellion and meanness.Spankings are for evil hearts andindifferent spirits, to get their attentionand cause them to respect the lawgiver.A child should know he deservesa spanking before you give him one, otherwise it creates anger.“Fathers, provoke not yourchildren to anger, lest they be discouraged”(Colossians 3:21).The time to inoculate your childrenagainst the human tendency toimpatient anger is when they are sixmonths old and four years old. Thinkabout life as playing a team sport. Ifyou throw someone into a basketballgame who doesn’t know the rules andhand him the ball, telling him it is his,he be will shocked when someoneruns up and takes it out of his hands. When he moves toward the goal,he will be shocked that the refereetakes it away from him on a charge of“traveling.” When he tries to throwthe ball through the basket, peoplejump up and grab it before it can goin. What a frustrating game! Get usedto it. That’s life. Here is the key, a principle youmust understand and apply: Childrenneed to be taught the rules and trainedto navigate the court and disciplinedin mind and body before they areexposed to the challenges of the game.Never allow your young children, evenas young as six months, to becomeunconquerably frustrated with the balland the court of life. Provide an example thatcommunicates that it is all right to experiencetemporary setbacks, for theyjust make the victory sweeter.Teach your children to be competentin many areas. This begins withmanipulating blocks of wood, assemblingthings, stacking cardboard boxesand cutting doors and windows. Itcontinues with teaching them to dressthemselves, cook, clean the house, and eventually do outside chores, and it graduates into skills that mostmen do not possess, such as repairingautomobiles, tuning pianos, programmingcomputers, music, art, science, entrepreneurship, and the possibilitiesare endless. The Gaudets Missionaries for Bible translationIn our morning prayer meeting, our staff prays for God to open doors inLibya, Bahrain, Pakistan and other nearby countries through the unrest thatis currently happening. As we work on translating Scripture and materials forevangelism and discipleship into many languages, we continually ask God howHe would use us to extend His purpose during these tragedies.Pay attention to what the Lord is doing in the world and ask Him if Hewants you to be a part of His plan. Faithfully pray and you might be surprisedat the understanding you can gain of current events and of what God is doing inthe world. Oftentimes through intercession we can affect great change. Pleasedo not think lightly of prayer. – For Souls Still Waiting, Tom GaudetThe Cofers Missionaries to MongoliaI am increasingly grateful for what God is doing and more encouragedthan ever over the potential impact of the printing ministry. Mongolians are atraditional, story telling people and most responsive to a narrative approach toevangelism and discipleship. NGJ’s history of Good and Evil is going into itssecond printing, and the first five volumes of the Bible Visuals InternationalSunday School Curriculum are now complete and being used on the field. The husband appreciates his wife’s abilityand has confidence that her enthusiasmwill carry her through to success. The same thing applies for goingback to college. If a man is learning andgrowing and he sees that his wife is justcoasting along, a loving husband willwant to help motivate his wife so shecan keep pace with him.No man wants a wife that spendsher days on the couch watching soapoperas or reading romance novels.A wife who is a phone chatter, Websurfer,or text message gossiper is reallya loser. These behaviors sap a man’shopes and dreams.A man knows that his smart,hard-working, industrious wife reflectswell on him, and she brings a lot to themarriage. Regardless of what kind ofman he is, a husband will find greatsatisfaction in the fact that his wife isself-motivated and hard-working.God gave us a thorough descriptionof how a virtuous woman spends herdays. Check to see if you fit the profile.Contrary to what I (or others) mightthink, this chapter, devoted to describinga godly woman, doesn’t representthis super-lady as a prayer warrioror a teacher of great Biblical truths. The woman described in Proverbs 31:10-31 is a successful, hard-workingand industrious businesswoman. Shesews and weaves, then sells her wares. She travels long distances to findgood deals. She buys land and plantsorchards. She has a staff of workerswhich she trains well. In all this activityshe still makes time to help the needy. This active businesswoman is resourcefuland aggressive. In verse 23 hersuccess brings her husband recognition.“Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of theland.” Verse 28 tells how her childrenrespond to their mother: “Her childrenarise up, and call her blessed; her husbandalso, and he praiseth her.”So what can a woman do if herhusband wants her to send their childrento public school and go to college? She can become a Proverbs 31wife. She can study, learn, grow, andbecome successful. She can win hisconfidence in her as a teacher of hischildren. In all my 40 years of ministeringto families, I have never seen ahusband (no matter how stiff-neckedand against homeschooling) who didn’trespond with thanksgiving when hiswife became a Proverbs 31 woman.A woman might complain that herhusband is lazy, fleshy, and all mannerof negative things. I can’t guaranteethe wife of the lazy husband that hewill change in response to her renewal. However, almost all men want what isbest for their families, so a man willrespond positively to his wife’s wishesif she proves to be an able partner in hisdesigns for the family. The question is this: Are you willingto rise to the challenge?Virtuous Woman ResourcesBlog with us at: PreparingToBeAHelpMeet.comBuy: Preparing To Be A Help Meet & Created To Be His Help MeetHomeschooling Tools: The Old Schoolhouse PlannerThe Old Schoolhouse Magazine is the premier publicationfor homeschooling families. Family GovernmentBy Michael PearlWatching the news online, I heard Mike Huckabee, former governor ofArkansas, say:“A stable family is the most basic form of government, because thefirst government any of us ever experiences is not the city council, not the state legislature or the congress; it’s Mother and Fathersetting the rules, creating the boundaries and borders for what isright and wrong, where we can go and cannot go, what we can do and can’t do;and if we don’t get it there then we have to wait for some other form of governmentto do it, maybe the schools, the city, the state, or even the federal government…”Mike Huckabee, May 7, 2011, Fox News.com.Mike Huckabee is absolutely rightin saying that a family is “the mostbasic form of government,” or at leastit should be. Children need to be governed, for they come into this worldthinking only of themselves. They areinnocent, indulgent liars, thieves, andtyrants, all needing to be governed, for they have the passions of a hedonistichippie and the self-restraint of apig, ready to receive all your love andreturn it with a selfish demand.Hey, I love kids. The more themerrier. But I have no delusion aboutthe nature of their fallen humanity.“The wicked are estranged from thewomb: They go astray as soon as theybe born, speaking lies” (Psalm 58:3).If you don’t start your child anthropologyhere you will fail miserably intraining up your children.Huckabee said, “…mother andfather setting the rules, creating theboundaries and borders for what isright and wrong, where we can go andcannot go, what we can do and can’tdo…” “Rules, boundaries, borders, can and can’t do”; that sounds likegovernment. Borders and boundariesimply absolute limitations. All ruleand authority is granted by God, andwith it the power to elicit compliance,by means of force if necessary.Romans 13:1, Let every soul besubject unto the higher powers. Forthere is no power but of God: thepowers that be are ordained of God.2 Whosoever therefore resisteththe power, resisteth the ordinance ofGod: and they that resist shall receiveto themselves damnation.3 For rulers are not a terror togood works, but to the evil. Wilt thouthen not be afraid of the power? dothat which is good, and thou shalthave praise of the same:4 For he is the minister of Godto thee for good. But if thou do thatwhich is evil, be afraid; for he bearethnot the sword in vain: for he is theminister of God, a revenger to executewrath upon him that doeth evil.26 www.nogreaterjoy.org | 1-866-292-9936

5 Wherefore ye must needs besubject, not only for wrath, but alsofor conscience sake. The real world into which childrenare growing and will eventuallyfunction is controlled by absoluterules that carry penalties for infractions. If parents fail to instill responsibilityin their children, as youngadults they will eventually come upagainst the hard, unrelenting facts oflife. The IRS is not permissive likemost parents are. Judges are knownto “throw the book” at those whobreak the rules. Policemen will giveyou a free ride to a free cell if yousmartmouth them. If you get violent, they may have mercy and knock yousenseless with a taser, or they may behaving a bad day and just shoot you21 times. But be sure of one thing: ifyou were brought up to talk back andrebel against authority, the cops andjudges will hit you like a concretewall at 100 miles per hour.I visit many men in prison whocame from homes where there wereno Daddy judges or Mama cops. Theylearned the rules the hard way. Someof them are looking forward to puttingtheir new perspectives in practicetwenty years from now when they getout—if they live that long.During the eighteen years I havebeen going to one specific prison, Ihave watched the visiting mothers andfathers grow old as they come visittheir sons weekly or monthly. Somehave become too old or sickly tomake the trip, others have died, theirspouses now coming alone. Theirsons are still there in their small cells, learning that “for whatsoever a mansoweth, that shall he also reap.”I often wonder if those visitingparents know where they went wrong.Do they blame themselves? Do theyknow they failed? Most of the menwere never spanked for their misdeedsas youths. A few were abused. But most were just neglected or raisedby the public schools and publicchurches. They got away with anythinguntil the day the men with thebadges and the guns showed up.The family must emulate allaspects of government if the childrenare to grow up with the skill sets andsense of responsibility that are necessaryto be successful in life. If parentsallow their children to live in apermissive environment, the childrenGood parenting, like goodgovernment, is consistent, never arbitrary, alwayspredictable, subject to theeternal rules of justice.develop a complete misunderstandingof the rules by which they must eventuallyplay the game of life.Foremost, parents must communicatethat all actions have consequences, that each individual sowsand reaps accordingly, that our rightsand liberties are a gift from God thatmust be used according to the rulesof honesty, benevolence, and justice.God gives the liberty; governmentguarantees the free exercise of it, andeach individual is responsible to makethe most of his gifts and opportunities. It is your choice. You can be poor orrich, educated or not, of good reputationor not, addicted to substance orthe master of your body, married to aworthy spouse or caught in the mireof your lustful decisions. You can eatwell or go hungry, have a fine houseor live in a roach hotel. It is up to you.You make your bed and then lie in it.Some politicians try to changethe rules and eliminate negative consequences. They want to guaranteepositive results to all.
