Alkoholmože da dovede do prekomerne telesne težinekod određenih ljudi, kod onih koji piju retko ilineumereno, tako što će poslužiti kao izvor energijei olakšati varenje hrane. Međutim, nekaistraživanja su pokazala da su ljudi koji redovno(dnevno) konzumiraju male količine alkoholamršaviji od ljudi čiji način konzumiranja alkoholapodrazumeva povremeno unošenje prekomernihkoličina pića 64 , 65 . Jedno od ovih istraživanjapokazuje da je, na fiksnom nivou konzumiranjaalkohola, rizik od gojaznosti skoro 30% manji kodljudi koji konzumiraju alkohol 7 dana u nedeljinego kod onih koji to rade 2-4 dana u nedelji 66 .O razlozima za to se i dalje diskutuje. Jedan odmogućih razloga je što alkohol, uključujući i pivo,kada se konzumira uz obroke može da stimulišeutrošak energije povećavanjem temperature, ali toima efekta samo pri konzumiranju malih količina uredovnim intervalima 67 , 68 . Međutim, teško je prepoznatii statistički obrazložiti sve faktore načinaživota, kao na primer nivo fizičke aktivnosti, amoguće je da je tu uključeno više faktora.Dijagnoza metaboličkog sindroma se daje ljudimakoji imaju čitav niz oboljenja, uključujućivisoku abdominalnu gojaznost, insulinsku rezistenciju,visok nivo triglicerida u krvi, nizak nivoHDL-a (dobrog holesterola) u krvi i visok krvnipritisak. On se povezuje sa povećanim rizikomod razvijanja diabetesa mellitusa tipa II, kardiovaskularnihbolesti i ciroze. Sve je veći broj ljudisa ovom bolešću i jedan od šest Evropljana od njeboluje.Iako nezdrav način života može da doprineseriziku od metaboličkog sindroma, naučniciizučavaju deo koji se odnosi na umereno konzumiranjealkohola 69 .
