Thesehigh performance standards have turned thistournament into a veritable feeder programmethat generates a pool of up and coming sportsmen.West Indies cricketers such as Brian Lara,Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Carl Hooper, RamnareshSarwan, Dinesh Ramdin and Lendl Simmons haveall emerged from this developmental phase to goonto the senior team.Since our sponsorship began in 2003, wehave seen young cricketers across the regionblossoming into their fullest potential. Thispast year has also yielded great success withTeam Guyana winning the 2006 Tournamentand taking five of the six TCL Individual Awards,including Man of the Match.And our contribution to Under 19 West IndiesCricket does not end there. We have also putour sponsorship behind the awards at the WestIndies Players’ Association’s Annual Ceremony.We were there to reward the Guyana team for itsall round success as our TCL award for Under 19Player of the Year went to Veersammy Permauland Team Guyana received the award for TCLGroup Team of the Year (2006).Our commitment to supporting and recognizingexcellence in our youth stands firm and our driveto be part of a legacy of success for our regionlives on.Annual Report 200649
Performance Management Policies and SystemsWell playedOur commitment to excellence demands that weconstantly assess ourselves and challenge ourselves toachieve higher standards of performance. The measureof our success must be right if we are to ensure thatwe are building a performance ethic that will producetrue excellence.systems which can be subjective and somewhatineffective in providing true and objective feedback,the 360° feedback assessment process includesassessment input from supervisors, co-workers, clientsand subordinates and is therefore valuable in improvingorganisational and individual performance.This was the driving thrust behind the review of ourPerformance Management Policies and Systems in2005. Until that time our system was based solelyon the measurement of the quantitative aspects ofperformance. Reviewing the system led to an upgradewhich would encompass a broader approach tomaximizing our human capital. This approach alsoaligns perfectly with our strategic corporate direction.By 2006, the new Performance Appraisal Systemwas fully implemented for Senior Managers andSenior Staff across the TCL Group. This new Systemwas introduced on a pilot basis and included a newprogramme of “360° assessments”.In order to align and integrate all aspects of performancemanagement within the Group, our Recruitment andSelection and our Training and Development policiesand procedures are also being modified. Like thenew 360° appraisal assessments, our recruitmentand training procedures are being tailored to assesskey behavioural competencies such as Leadership,Innovation, Initiative, Ownership, Results Orientationand Relationship Management. These behaviouralcompetencies are supported by the Group’s corebusiness values of Honesty and Integrity, Fairness andEquity, Mutual Respect and Support, Accountabilityand Responsibility and Trust and Transparency.360° feedback assessments are powerful tools forhelping individuals improve, grow, and develop theirinterpersonal skills and behavioural competencies.Compared to traditional performance evaluationThis new performance management system is nowfully entrenched across the Group and will go a longway towards benefiting and improving every employeeand towards enhancing our greater overall success.50
