Students entering grade 5 are usually ready to do some independentreading. Even though they can read on their own, it’s still okay to readbooks aloud or together as you complete the squares on the bingo board. No need to initial each square—just sign at the end of the summer to indicatethat your child read all of the books that he or she has filled into theboard. Children will bring their boards to school in September, so watchfor news about bingo recognitions from your school! As you help your child select books to read this summer, pleaseconsider this list a starting point. These titles are suggestions from teachersacross town and the librarians at Thayer Library. None of these arerequired reads, and students are welcome to read from the grade levelsabove or below their own! We hope you find this list helpful as you lookfor new great reads and revisit some old favorites.Suggested books for students entering fifth grade…The Series of Unfortunate Events Series by Lemony SnicketBlack Beauty by Anna SewellBud, Not Buddy by Paul Christopher CurtisThe Guardians of Ga’hoole Series by Kathryn LaskyThe Dealing with Dragons Series by Patricia WredeElla Enchanted by Gail Carson LevineThe Emmy Series by Lynne JonnellEragon by Christopher PaoliniFablehaven by Brandon MullThe King of Mulberry Street by Donna Jo NapoliThe Lionboy Books by Zizou CorderMagyk by Angie SageThe Molly Moon Series by Georgia ByngOn the Wings of Heroes by Richard PeckThe Penderwicks Books by Jeanne BirdsallPrince of Fenway Park by Julianna BaggotThe Redwall Series by Brian JacquesThe Rowan of Rin Series by Emily RoddaRuby Holler by Sharon CreechThe Secret Garden by Frances BurnettThe Spiderwick Chronicles Series by Tony DiTerlizziThe Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamilloforstudentsenteringgrade 5Dear Parents and Guardians:I hope you and your student areenjoying the conclusion to a productiveyear with the Braintree Public Schools.Throughout the year, students had manyopportunities to read and listen to booksread aloud during the school day. Yoursupport for those same readingexperiences at home will help your childcontinue to grow as a reader, writer, thinker, and learner. As you plan for the summer, please consider the literacy experiences yourchild will have in these months away from the classroom. Book Bingo is agreat way to keep up the learning and the fun! Use the board on the back ofthis page to earn bingo (or more than one bingo!) as you read this summer. In addition to local bookstores and online booksellers, the Thayer PublicLibrary is a valuable (and free!) local resource. If you need help in selectingbooks, do not hesitate to ask the librarian! For those of you planning travel this summer, consider going beyond thebookshelves and print pages to include audio books in your child’sexperience. These are available at the library on CD or on iTunes (ready togo right onto an iPod!). While audio books are no replacement for reading, they are a wonderful supplement, especially when experienced with a copyof the actual book.As you explore these opportunities, remember that summer reading is forpleasure! I hope you and your child find many enjoyable books and storiesto be part of your summer. I look forward to working with you throughoutthe year to assist with your child’s literacy development.Sincerely,Rebecca FredericksDirector of English & Reading, K-12rfredericks@braintreema.govAdditional copies of this board and suggested books can be found at www.braintreeschools.org/summer
