A Cosmos of CreativityShakespeare lies at the centre of our dramaticuniverse. Here at Stratford, we celebrate him inour theatres by honouring his text and by placingit in the context of the work of his predecessors, contemporaries and successors, so we can betterunderstand his breathtaking achievement. In doingso, we range freely through the best and mostenduring works of the dramatic canon. This season, you can explore the diversity ofShakespeare’s genius in three such very differentplays as Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream andJulius Caesar. You also have a rare opportunityto compare his work to that of his friend andrival Ben Jonson, whose Bartholomew Fair is abrilliant satire of life in London, Shakespeare’sadopted city, or with that of Jean Racine, whose Phèdre is searing drama from a differentdramatic tradition. Both these plays aremasterpieces in their own right – and to seethem performed is to discover how radicalare the differences between the world’sgreatest playwright and his nearest peers.Shakespeare’s unprecedentedexploration of the human comedy pavedthe way for such subsequent dramatistsas Anton Chekhov, Edmond Rostand andOscar Wilde, whose work also features on ourstages this season. His influence reveals itselfeven in our two musicals, one of which sharesits ancestry with The Comedy of Errors while theother draws directly on Romeo and Juliet. Our own writers here in Canada owe no less toShakespeare and the extraordinary creative fermentof his age. George F. Walker’s Canadian classicZastrozzi uses the Jacobean revenge tragedy as itspoint of departure, while Sunil Kuruvilla’s Rice Boy,newly revised for our production, is rooted, likesome of Shakespeare’s greatest plays, in the tensionsbetween parents and children. So too is MorrisPanych’s The Trespassers, a brand-new play thatreceives its world première here this season. We are delighted to welcome you to this, our57th season. We hope you will enjoy exploring withus the astonishingly varied dramatic universe thatShakespeare helped to create and that will alwayshonour him as its centre.antoni CimolinoGeneral DirectorDe s m c a n u ffArtistic DirectorWe dedicate our 2009 seasonto the memory ofrichard monetteArtistic Director of this Festivalfrom 1994 to 2007.1

Crime and Punishmentby Robert BlackerBelow | Colm Feore (maCbeth) in rehearsalFacing page, From top | Colm Feore (leFt) with Des mcanuFF (DireCtor);Yanna mcintosh (laDY maCbeth); Yanna mcintosh anD Colm FeoreFollowing page | Colm FeorePhotograPhY bY sCott wishart/beaCon heralDThat seemingly most gentle of playwrights, ThorntonWilder, wrote that we are meant to see ourselvesin the terrifying Macbeths. Being able to recognizeourselves in the characters on stage was for Wilderfundamental to the power of theatre: “We haveall murdered in thought and been murdered. Wehave all seen the ridiculous in estimable personsand in ourselves. We have all known terror aswell as enchantment. Imaginative literature hasnothing to say to those who do not recognize –who cannot be reminded of – such conditions.”In Macbeth, Shakespeare takes us on oneof the darkest rides in theatre, and part of theterror he creates is by forcing us to experiencethe play through his two leads. He does this in anumber of ways. Even before he enters, Macbeth2

is presented as a war hero who saves his countryfrom domestic rebellion and foreign invasion. Thisand his early struggles with his “black and deepdesires” allow us to enter his journey with himrather than against him. Thereafter, Shakespeareputs us inside the heads of the Macbeths andtheir point of view in their many soliloquiesand asides for nearly a tenth of the play.We do not see that struggle in his wife. Shesees “the future in the instant” and moves withdetermination to create it, calling on spirits to fillher “from crown to toe top-full of direst cruelty.” Thisinvocation comes so quickly after her first entrancethat she is often presented as cruel, but does itnot actually imply that Lady Macbeth must fortifyherself in order to commit the terrible act of murder?Later we will see the cracks in the armour that shedons here and get a glimpse of what is inside. We get one glimpse while her husband iskilling Duncan offstage. She is drunk and revealstoo much: “Had he not resembled my father ashe slept, I had done’t” seems a lame excuse forsomeone of her supposed ferocity. Sounds startleher as she nervously awaits and then welcomesher husband. In fact, we experience this entirescene through the overwrought emotions of thetwo murderers. Alfred Hitchcock often forces hisaudiences to identify with questionable characters, even murderers, by making us audit his filmsthrough their eyes and ears. He does this for thesame reason that Shakespeare does here: to suggestthat we all harbour black and deep desires. The Porter suggests this in the scene thatfollows. He steps out of the play to remind usthat we too are sinners. He fashions himself asthe Porter of Hell Gate, a comic character fromplays Shakespeare would have seen as a child, and welcomes three professions notorious toShakespeare’s audiences who overreached, lied andcheated on their “primrose way to th’everlastingbonfire.” And then he asks us, “What are you?” Forthis production, we have modernized the sinners,as Shakespeare did – they were contemporaryto Shakespeare’s time, not to Macbeth’s – so wecan see clearly what Shakespeare is up to.As Macbeth’s crimes multiply and becomeeven more heinous in the second half of the3

4play, Shakespeare will gradually detach us fromthe Macbeths, but one vestige of their humanitycontinues to move us: they truly seem to loveeach other. At the heart of this dark ride is a lovestory. In Will in the World, Stephen Greenblatt writesabout this: “There are two significant exceptions toShakespeare’s unwillingness or inability to imaginea married couple in a relationship of sustainedintimacy, but they are unnervingly strange: Gertrudeand Claudius in Hamlet and the Macbeths.”The Macbeths know each other so well that theyseem to inhabit each other’s minds. Lady Macbethunsexes herself to help her husband attain whatshe knows he wants but will not speak. In a playfull of fathers and sons, they are a childless couplewho put their energies into his career. Macbethin turn protects her from participation in the latermurders after he observes her faint when thecourt gathers after Duncan’s murder. Macbeth andLady Macbeth need each other to commit thefirst murders, which could not be done withoutboth of them, but soon begin to retreat into theirprivate hells. They never speak to each other afterthe banquet scene, even though a third of the playremains. This isolation from each other is the pricethey pay for their crimes, and Shakespeare makesus feel this through her absence from the stage. It is in this section of the play that Shakespeareturns more to the public story. During thefirst half of his writing career, Shakespeareexamined the nature of political leadership inhis history plays. He continued this examinationin the great tragedies that followed, andMacbeth is in part a study of three kings.Whatever Duncan represents as a person, he isnever seen on the battlefield or even commandinghis armies from afar. His kingdom, in chaos fromrebellion at home and invasion from abroad, is savedonly by Macbeth and Banquo. In Shakespeare’ssource for the play, Holinshed’s Chronicles of Scotland,Macbeth feels he deserves to be the next king. Themonarchy in Scotland at that time was not alwayshereditary. The king was usually chosen by electionby thanes from among a group of blood relatives, and the crown often went to the warrior-in-chief.Shakespeare is not explicit about this, but thereare traces of it in his play. When Ross first informs

Macbeth that the king has named him Thane ofCawdor, Ross tells him what both seem to believe:that this is a pledge of a greater honour to come.Macbeth, by contrast, is a warrior king, capableof leading troops on the battlefield and evendefeating the enemy in hand-to-hand combat. But“blood will have blood,” as he tells his wife, and onemurder leads to another. When his thanes finallyrevolt, their charge against him is not regicide buttyranny. The word tyrant is first heard at the end ofAct III and rings out through the rest of the play. All compromise themselves under his corruptregime. Ross refuses to acknowledge Macduff’ssuspicions. Banquo decides not to tell othersabout the Sisters’ prophecy, and Macduff placeshis family in peril to go seek Malcolm in England. We see what kind of king Malcolm will be in hisscene with Macduff. That it is the longest in theplay should tell us something about its importanceto Shakespeare. Malcolm lies so convincinglythat when he reveals the truth – that he wastesting his interlocutor – Macduff does not knowwhether to believe him or not. Malcolm is one ofShakespeare’s effective leaders, smart enough tobe crafty and manipulative when needed, and onewho understands that a modern leader organizesand leaves others to fight in the field. At the endof this scene he creates the perfect avenger ashe takes Macduff through grief to revenge.Greenblatt summarizes the complex terrors thatthis great, dark play evokes: “If you are worriedabout losing your manhood . . . look to your wife.If you are worried about temptation, fear yourown dreams. If you are anxious about your ownfuture, scrutinize your best friends. And if you feelspiritual desolation, turn your eyes on the contentsnot of the hideous cauldron, but of your skull.”Robert Blacker is dramaturge for the StratfordShakespeare Festival and for this production ofMacbeth.William Shakespeare – playwrightBorn in Stratford-upon-Avonin 1564, William Shakespearewas the eldest son of JohnShakespeare, a glover andtanner who rose to becomean alderman and bailiff of thetown, and Mary Arden, thedaughter of a wealthy farmer. The exact date of his birthis unknown, but there is a record of his baptismon April 26. Since an interval of two or three daysbetween birth and baptism would have been quitecommon, tradition has it that he was born on April23 – the same date as his death 52 years later. The young Shakespeare is assumed to haveattended what is now the Edward VI GrammarSchool in Stratford, where he would have studiedancient Roman literature in its original Latin. In1582, when he was 18, he married Anne Hathaway,a farmer’s daughter who was eight years his senior.Anne was pregnant at the time, and the couple’sfirst daughter, Susanna, was born a few monthsafterwards in 1583. Twins followed two years later: ason, Hamnet, who died at the age of 11, and a seconddaughter, Judith.Nothing further is known of Shakespeare’s life until1592, by which time he was sufficiently establishedas an actor and writer in London to be the target of aliterary attack by a jealous fellow playwright, RobertGreene. Soon afterwards, an outbreak of plagueforced the temporary closure of the theatres, andShakespeare turned his attention instead to his longnarrative poems Venus and Adonis and The Rape ofLucrece. He also began writing the Sonnets, a seriesof 154 love poems that many believe to be at leastpartly autobiographical.By 1594, Shakespeare was back in the theatre, writing and acting for the Lord Chamberlain’sMen. His income as one of the country’s mostsuccessful dramatists enabled him, in 1597, to buy amansion back in Stratford, and in 1599 he became ashareholder in London’s newly built Globe Theatre. In 1603, Shakespeare’s company was awarded aroyal patent, becoming known as the King’s Men.Possibly as early as 1610, the playwright retired tohis home in Stratford-upon-Avon, living there untilhis death on April 23, 1616. He is buried in the town’sHoly Trinity Church.5

Ideas and InsightsArcelorMittal applauds the artists, artisans and staff behind everyoutstanding experience at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival.Costume sketCh bY Paul tazewellThe Bloody PendulumMacbeth begins and ends in war. Duncan’s regime isattacked by rebels from within and by invaders fromabroad. Civil war and foreign invasion threaten theexistence of his country. The fighting is fierce andbrutal and described by Shakespeare in the mostgraphic terms: “Till [Macbeth] unseamed him fromthe nave to th’ chops.” It is important to rememberthat Macbeth is introduced, not as a villain, but asa war hero who saves a country under the rule of aweak king. This is one reason why I have set this productionin mythic mid-20th-century Africa. The extremeviolence we have witnessed in some Africancountries in the last 50 years is intended to conjureup the blood-drenched world of Shakespeare’s play, where “blood will have blood.”I hope that Africa will also provide a usefulcontext in which to place the three womenwho open the play. They refer to themselves notas witches, but as the Weird Sisters, and that iswhat Macbeth and Banquo call them as well.Today, they may seem more like practitionersof a pre-Christian religion than Elizabethanfantasies of witches. Most importantly, thesecharacters deserve to be treated with dignityas people, not as abstractions or fantasies. The English thought the Scots were barbarians, and that word is used against Africans today bypeople who do not understand that what we arewitnessing on that continent is the bloody birthof nations freeing themselves from their colonialpasts and forging their modern identities. Wesee that dynamic in the 11th-century Scotland ofShakespeare’s play. With the help of English troops, the historicalMalcolm moved Scotland away from its bloodypast towards a more stable and modern form ofgovernment modelled after England, with directlineal descent and stronger feudal allegiance to theking. That is why Malcolm names his thanes “earls” –6

an English title – at the end of the play. Like PrinceHal, he is one of Shakespeare’s modern Machiavellianleaders, and like Hal he is capable of manipulatingothers when necessary. During his reign, Malcolmturned his country more toward England, only tobe forced to submit to William the Conqueror asoverlord, when the latter invaded Britain in 1066.Of course, power is always cyclical in Shakespeare’splays: he was an astute observer of history. Weakkings are followed by strong kings as the pendulumof history swings from victory to defeat, from orderto anarchy. A thousand years after Macbeth andMalcolm, Scottish nationalists are still uncomfortablewith British rule and steadfastly strive for politicalindependence.Macbeth resonates today for those of us whohave witnessed, within the last half century, theassassination of a U.S. president, whereupon theassassin himself was killed. A sprawling series ofdeaths followed in what seemed like a neverendingshock wave of sometimes unsolved politicalmurders. It was, as in Shakespeare’s play, the woundon a nation that refused to heal, and insteadmultiplied – “Double, double, toil and trouble.”On a domestic level, the Macbeths are familiar asa contemporary childless couple who replace babywith career and fiercely pour all of the love andhope normally associated with an infant into theirsingle-minded partnership. Macbeth is an especiallyintimate (though grotesquely twisted) love storysandwiched between epic historical events. The African setting is not intended to be an exactmirror image of Shakespeare’s times any more thanShakespeare’s play is an exact copy of 11th-centuryScotland. It is a refracted and composite reflection –history through a crystal or prism – and it is intendedto extract the essence of the truths in the play thatsadly proves itself universal, more apt today thanwhen Shakespeare invented it.For it is not only the themes of the play butits very subjects that are startlingly familiar:unsolved assassination leading to civil war, militaryinvasion, regime change, moral cowardice, inbredcorruption, unchecked dictatorial powers and thediseased politics of terror. Shakespeare’s Macbethis contemporary indeed, proof of the adage that“things don’t change, they just get more so.”Des mcanuffDirectorThe CastThe Weird SistersDuncanMalcolm} his sonsDonalbainBleeding SergeantLennoxRossAngusMacbethLady MacbethTheir PorterWaiting GentlewomanDoctorSeytonBanquoFleance, his sonMacduffLady MacduffTheir SonOld ManBanquo’s MurderersMenteithCaithnessSeyward,Earl of NorthumberlandYoung Seyward, his sonDuncan’s ChamberlainsNursekaren glaveamanda lismanCara rickettsgeraint wyn Daviesgareth Potterandrew shaverandré sillssanjay talwarJohn Vickerykevin hanchardColm FeoreYanna mcintoshtom rooneyirene PooleJames blendickDavid Collinstimothy D. stickneyaraya mengeshaDion Johnstonesophia walkerkolton stewartroy lewissean arbucklePeter huttbruce godfreeoliver beckerJonathan Purdonwayne bestgordon s. millerDouglas e. hughesJohn innesasha VijayasinghamSoldiers, Messengers and Servants played bymembers of the companyUnderstudiessean arbuckle (Menteith, Caithness), wayne best (Duncan,Seyton), karen glave (Lady Macduff ), bruce godfree(Donalbain, Young Seyward), kevin hanchard (Macduff ),Douglas e. hughes (Porter, Second Murderer, Seyward),John innes (Doctor, Old Man), roy lewis (BleedingSergeant), Jake mcCarroll (Macduff’s Son), araya mengesha(Angus), gordon s. miller (Ross), irene Poole (First Sister,Third Sister), gareth Potter (Macbeth), Jonathan Purdon(Lennox, First Murderer, Third Murderer), Cara ricketts (LadyMacbeth), andrew shaver (Malcolm), andré sills (Banquo),asha Vijayasingham (Second Sister, Waiting Gentlewoman,Fleance)There will be one interval of 15 minutes.7
