24th Sunday in Ordinary TimeYear BFirst Reading Is 50:5-9A reading from the prophet IsaiahThe Lord has opened my ear.For my part, I made no resistance, neither did I turn away. I offered myback to those who struck me, mycheeks to those who tore at mybeard; I did not cover my faceagainst insult and spittle. The Lordcomes to my help, so that I amuntouched by the insults. So, too, I setmy face like flint; I know I shall not beshamed. My vindicator is here athand. Does anyone start proceedingsagainst me? Then let us go to courttogether. Who thinks he has a caseagainst me? Let him approach me.The Lord is coming to my help, whodare condemn me?The word of the Lord.Second Reading Jas 2:14-18A reading from the letter of St JamesTake the case, my brothers, ofsomeone who has never done asingle good act but claims that hehas faith. Will that faith save him? Ifone of the brothers or one of thesisters is in need of clothes and hasnot enough food to live on, and oneof you says to them, ‘I wish you well;keep yourself warm and eat plenty,’without giving them these barenecessities of life, then what good isthat? Faith is like that: if good worksdo not go with it, it is quite dead. Thisis the way to talk to people of thatkind: ‘You say you have faith and Ihave good deeds; I will prove to youthat I have faith by showing you mygood deeds – now you prove to methat you have faith without any gooddeeds to show.’The word of the Lord.Gospel Mk 8:27-35A reading from the holy Gospel according toMarkJesus and his disciples left for thevillages round Caesarea Philippi. Onthe way he put this question to hisdisciples, ‘Who do people say I am?’And they told him. ‘John the Baptist,’they said, ‘others Elijah; others again, one of the prophets.’ ‘But you,’ heasked, ‘who do you say I am?’ Peterspoke up and said to him, ‘You arethe Christ.’ And he gave them strictorders not to tell anyone about him.And he began to teach them thatthe Son of Man was destined to suffergrievously, to be rejected by theelders and the chief priests and thescribes, and to be put to death, andafter three days to rise again; and hesaid all this quite openly. Then, takinghim aside, Peter started toremonstrate with him. But, turningand seeing his disciples, he rebukedPeter and said to him, ‘Get behindme, Satan! Because the way youthink is not God’s way but man’s.’ Hecalled the people and his disciples tohim and said, ‘If anyone wants to bea follower of mine, let him renouncehimself and take up his cross andfollow me. For anyone who wants tosave his life will lose it; but anyonewho loses his life for my sake, and forthe sake of the gospel, will save it.’The Gospel of the Lord.Reflectionby Dianne Bergant CSAThere are several messianictraditions, each one characterisingthe anointed one of the future in aunique way. Do we expect aprophetic figure who will enter ourworld and reform the structures ofsociety, or a strong leader who willoverturn these structures andestablish a new order? Are wewaiting for a teacher who willtransform our minds and hearts, or ajudge who will punish us for ourinfidelities? Are we expectingsomeone who will renew the face ofthe earth, or someone who will comein fire and brimstone to destroy it?What kind of a messiah do weexpect? For what kind of a changeare we preparing ourselves? Jesusseems to overturn our expectations. We look for one who will save us fromthe predicaments in which we findourselves, and he comes to us as onewho seems to be a victim of his ownpredicament. God’s thinking seemsto be the reverse of ours: Those whosave their lives, lose them; those wholose their lives, save them; the seedmust die before it can bear fruit;Jesus will be killed, but will then beraised from the dead. Can we claimto understand Jesus? Or are wemore like the people in James’community: people who profess faithin Jesus, but who do not live it out;people who speak pleasant words toothers, who say the right things, butwho do not back up their words withgood works? Is our faith really living?NEXT WEEK’S GOSPEL25th Sunday in Ordinary Time20 SEPTEMBER 2009After leaving the mountain Jesusand his disciples made their waythrough Galilee; and he did notwant anyone to know, because hewas instructing his disciples; hewas telling them, 'The Son ofMan will be delivered into thehands of men; they will put him todeath; and three days after he hasbeen put to death he will riseagain'. But they did notunderstand what he said and wereafraid to ask him. They came toCapernaum, and when he was inthe house he asked them, 'Whatwere you arguing about on theroad?' They said nothing becausethey had been arguing which ofthem was the greatest. So he satdown, called the twelve to himand said, 'if anyone wants to befirst, he must make himself last ofall and servant of all'. He thentook a little child, set him in frontof them, put his arms around him,and said to them, 'Anyone whowelcomes one of these littlechildren in my name, welcomesme, and anyone who welcomesme, welcomes not me but the onewho sent me.'- Mark 9:30-37DID YOU KNOW?• In sitting down to instruct thedisciples about being ofservice to others, Jesus isreinforcing his words aboutbeing the least. At that time,a teacher had greater statusthan his students. Thenormal practice was forstudents to sit at the feet ofthe teacher, not the other wayaround.• In the ancient world, childrenhad no status at all but Jesusputs a child before them andembraces him in welcome. This is another gesture ofreversal.
