A driver fitness determination is any decision regarding fitness to drivethat requires the exercise of discretion. Determinations are made byadjudicators and case managers. To make a driver fitness determination, acase manager or adjudicator considers the information collected throughassessment, as well as any other relevant information on file, anddetermines whether an individual is fit to drive the types of motor vehiclespermitted under the licence class held or applied for. The determinationmay also include a decision to impose restrictions or conditions. If anindividual is fit to drive, the case manager or adjudicator will also decidewhether re-assessment at a future date is required.The factors that are relevant to a driver fitness determination for aparticular individual vary somewhat depending upon whether theindividual has a persistent or episodic impairment, the function that isimpaired, whether conditions and/or restrictions may be appropriate andthe types of vehicles the individual wishes to drive. The policies outlinedin this chapter, and the medical condition guidelines outlined in themedical condition chapters in Part 3, provide guidance to case managersand adjudicators in considering these factors and making driver fitnessdeterminations.7.2 Components of driver fitness determinationsDefinitionsFit to drivemeans that an individual’s motor, sensory and cognitive functions aresufficient to drive safelyPolicy7.2.1 As part of each driver fitness determination, a case manager oradjudicator will determine:(a) whether an individual is fit to drive the types of motor vehiclesallowed under the class of licence held or applied for(b) whether any restrictions or conditions are required in order foran individual to be fit to drive the types of motor vehiclesallowed under the class of licence held or applied for (see 7.9for policies on imposing restrictions and conditions), and53
