Chapter 3:Driver Fitness Program Principles3.1 OverviewOSMV has articulated the following four principles that guide the DriverFitness Program. By following these principles, OSMV ensures thatdrivers are given the maximum licensing privilege possible taking intoaccount their medical condition, its impact on the functions necessary fordriving and the driver’s ability to compensate for the condition.Risk management1. Public safety is the primary consideration when making driver fitnessdeterminations, but a degree of risk to public safety may be tolerated inorder to allow a broad range of people to drive.Functional approach2. Driver fitness determinations will be based primarily on functionalability to drive, not diagnosisIndividual assessment3.
