20.10 Commercial drivers who have had surgery to repair a cerebral aneurysmApplicationAssessment guidelinesFitness guidelinesOSMV determinationguidelinesConditionsRestrictionsRe-assessmentguidelinesPolicy rationaleThese guidelines apply to driver fitness determinations forcommercial drivers who have had surgery to repair a cerebralaneurysm.If further information regarding an individual’s medical condition isrequired, OSMV will request: a Driver’s Medical Examination Report additional information from the treating physician, or an assessment from a neurosurgeon.If the treating physician indicates symptoms that impair one or moreof the functions necessary for driving, OSMV will request functionalassessment(s) as appropriate for the type(s) of impairment and classof licence held.Individuals who have had surgery to repair a cerebral aneurysm maynot drive for at least 6 months after surgery. After 6 months theymay drive if:they have no symptoms of the aneurysm, orif they continue to have symptoms, the symptoms do not impairtheir functional ability to drive.OSMV may find individuals fit to drive if: it has been at least 6 months since the surgery, and they have no symptoms of the aneurysm, or the treating physician does not indicate that symptoms of theaneurysm may impair the functions necessary for driving, or where the treating physician indicates that symptoms of theaneurysm may impair the functions necessary for driving, afunctional assessment indicates that they have the functionalability required for their class of licence held.No conditions are required.No restrictions are required.If the individual is not having symptoms, no re-assessment, other thanroutine commercial re-assessment, is required.If the individual is having symptoms, OSMV will determine theappropriate re-assessment interval on an individual basis, dependingupon the nature and severity of the symptoms.The waiting period for commercial drivers is longer than that forprivate drivers in order to provide more certainty about the success ofsurgery prior to a return to driving.251
