16.10 Private and commercial drivers with vestibular disorders resulting inpersistent impairmentApplicationThese guidelines apply to private and commercial drivers withvestibular disorders resulting in persistent impairment.If further information regarding an individual’s medical condition isrequired, OSMV will request: a Driver’s Medical Examination Report, or additional information from the treating physician.If cognitive screening indicates that the cognitive functions necessaryfor driving are impaired, OSMV will not request further assessments.Assessment guidelinesFitness guidelinesOSMV determinationguidelinesConditionsRestrictionsRe-assessmentguidelinesPolicy rationaleOSMV will request an assessment of the individual’s sensorimotorfunction from an occupational therapist or driver rehabilitationspecialist, unless there has been no significant change in theindividual’s condition or functional ability since a previous functionalassessment.If the treating physician, or cognitive screening, indicates possibleimpairment of the cognitive functions necessary for driving, OSMVwill request a DriveABLE assessment.Individuals may or may not drive based on the result of theircognitive and/or sensorimotor functional assessment.OSMV may find individuals fit to drive if a functional assessmentindicates they have the functional ability required for their class oflicence held.No conditions are required.No restrictions are required.OSMV will determine the appropriate re-assessment interval on anindividual basis.Persistent vestibular dysfunction may cause significant impairment ofthe functions needed for driving. Decisions about driver fitnessshould be based on an individual functional assessment.159
