Louis DeGoes served as secretary toboth the U.S. Organizing Committee and the PaperReview and Publication Committee.Editing of the first proceedings volume wasunder the direction of Robert C. Rooney of the NationalAcademy of Sciences. Roseanne R. Price andChris McShane provided editorial assistance forthe 276 papers published in the first volume. Thestaff of the National Acadeny Press, under the directionof William M. Burns, expeditiously processedmore than 2000 pages of camra-ready mnuscriptfor the two-volume compendium. Throughoutthe publication of both volums, the editorial,graphics and word processing staffs at the ColdRegions <strong>Research</strong> and Engineering Laboratory assistedin lnany ways, including editing and preparationof the final caera-ready copy of much ofthe present volume. Weller, Vice Chairlnan ofthe U.S. Organizing Comdttee. Dr. Weller's leadershipand foresight were major contributing factorsin the success of the conference. WilliamD. Harrison and William M. Sackinger were thechairmen of the program committee and the localarrangements committee, respectively. They wereably assisted by Kathryn W. Coffer, Cheryl E.Howard and other support staff of the GeophysicalInstitute of the University of Alaska, includingJim Coccia, photographer, and the editorial staffof the Northern Englneer under Carla Helfferich.Numerous local volunteers, who cannot all be listedhere, helped with the preparations. s. RussellStearns, President, Amrican Society of Civil Engineers,presented the keynote address at the conference banquet.The Departrnent of Conferences and Institutesof the University of Alaska provided rmch of theorganizational support for the actual conference.This included all details on pre-registration andhousing arrangements, actual conference registration,and support for laany aspects of the socialand technical activities that took place duringthe week. These efforts were under the directionof John R. Hickey and Nancy Bachner; Elaine Walker,Gary Walker and Sharon Oien played majorroles. Personnel of the Housing Office, includingEric A. Jozwiak and Mark Van Rhyn, were most helpfulin accommodating the hundreds of participantsand their families. Timothy L. Jensen and RonaldU. Monteleone of the AFtA Food Service did an excellentjob in preparing and serving refreshmentsfor the opening session and the barbecue.Several other activities deserve special attention.Editing and publication of the fieldguidebooks were performed by the Alaska Divisionof Geological and Geophysical Surveys, Fairbanks.The ADGGS editorial and support staff includesCheri L.
