Boththese celebrations can be daunting forGot an interesting story to tell?Champ Newsdesk 01704 392400Sam’s sponsored slimmers put their best foot forward!Slimmers from Southport have walked over5 miles to raise £185 for Cancer Research UK.The members of the St Philip’s SlimmingWorld group on Scarisbrick New Road, weretaking part in their own Race at Your Place eventto raise money for Slimming World’s fundraisingpartner for 2013 – Cancer Research UK. Theyhave teamed up to help people live healthier livesand raise awareness of the links between beingoverweight and developing cancer.The mini Race for Life, which took placearound central Southport, included a walk alongthe beach front and around the marine lake. Itwas part of a national event during July andAugust 2013 Slimming World challenged all itsgroups across the UK to hold their own Raceat Your Place. The group’s members chose thedistance and the route they wanted to cover.The aim of Race at Your Place was to raisemoney for charity whilst raising awareness aboutthe amazing benefi ts of getting active, includingincreasing energy levels, reducing stress, buildingself-esteem, improving health and helping tomaintain a healthy weight. Having an activelifestyle also reduces the risk of developing a rangeof conditions including all types of cancer. All ofthe money raised for Cancer Research UK will gotowards helping the charity to fund pioneering, lifesavingresearch into the prevention, diagnosis andtreatment of cancers.Sam Jones who runs the St Philip’sSlimming World group every week at St Philip’sChurch on Scarisbrick New Road, says hermembers were delighted to be able to do afun activity together and raise money for thecharity. She says: “Our Race at Your Placeevent was a great reason for us to get activeand to challenge ourselves –cancer touches somany lives so it was all in a good cause!“When you’re overweight you can strugglewith doing any exercise, and it can be verydaunting to take the fi rst steps to becomingmore active – but it’s defi nitely worth it. Thebenefi ts are huge! The key is to start small andfi nd something that you enjoy. There’s no rulethat says being active has to involve a gym orLycra, it can be as simple as walking to collectthe children from school.“Lots of my members started to becomemore active by taking part in our Body Magicprogramme and discovered something theyreally love doing. Alongside our Food Optimisingeating plan, it helps members to live a healthierlife and they’ve seen huge benefi ts includingtoning up their muscles and feeling much happierand more confi dent. I’m hoping our Race at YourPlace event will have helped to inspire even morepeople to get moving too.“Every week at group as well as sharingrecipes and tips, celebrating each other’ssuccess and helping everyone to prepare forthe week ahead, we talk about activity and thedifferent options available in our area and lots ofthe members do these activities together now.“Taking part in Race at Council’s TradingStandards were one of 23local authorities to be part ofthe Young person’s alcoholand tobacco survey 2013.This year Sefton received1,180 completed survey’swhich assesses the behaviourof 14 to 17–year–olds in theborough towards alcohol andtobacco.Survey results also showedthere has been a slightincrease in the percentage ofyoung smokers in Seftongetting cigarettes from offlicences but falls in thepercentage of buying fromnewsagentsandsupermarkets.There were also fallsrecorded in the percentage ofyoung people in Seftonclaiming to buy
