This result is a clearindication of the anger felt byfire fighters.”It’s still not too late forcommon sense to prevail ifthe government are willing toPension row hots up – it’sone of the most generous inpublic sector says ministerreturn to the negotiatingtable. None of us want astrike, but we cannotcompromise on public andfire fighter safety.“The union has not yet setstrike dates and will seekfurther dialogue with therelevant governmentministers and fire serviceemployers in an attempt toresolve the dispute. Thegovernment, however, saysthe existing arrangementsare not affordable.Fire minister Brandon Lewissaid: ”This government doesnot believe that industrialaction is necessary. Thepension on offer tofirefighters is one of the mostgenerous in the public sector.“The FBU is creating asmokescreen around theissues of fitness andretirement age to justify theirbehaviour whilst ignoring thefacts.“After two years ofdiscussions and improvedterms, firefighters will stillget one of the most generouspublic service pensionsavailable – £26,000 a year, when including the £7,000state pension.“Someone in the privatesector would have tocontribute twice as much toget the same pension.”1120538
The Champion • Wednesday 4 September 2013Residents ‘prisonersin their own homes’by Holly RummensTHE LATEST parking restrictions inFormby have created nothing morethan a build up of further problems, say furious residents.Double yellow lines have beenintroduced on some residential areasof Formby in a bid to reduce theamount of parked cars during schoolholidays and weekends. However thesolution has only shifted the problemfrom one area to another. The roads that have been given thenew parking restrictions includeDunes Drive, Gorse Way, ProctorRoad and Squirrel Green.Since then numerous cars have beenparking on other residential streetssuch as Harington Road, OakfieldDrive and Barkfield Lane, creating thesame problem but for other Formbyresidents.During the latest area committee, residents suggested seasonal waitingrestrictions as a solution, instead ofmoving the problem to another areaof Formby.A spokesman for Sefton Council said:“Formby beach and pinewoods areGlassesWhile You Wait2 pairs of single vision glasses from £752 pairs of bifocal glasses from £952 pairs of varifocal glasses from £115£10EYETESTSSingle vision lenses while you wait.Same day service on varifocaland bifocal lensesEmergency repair serviceContact LensesFREE NHS Sight TestsKids Go Free* terms & conditions apply.Blundellsands Optical Ltd13 - 15 MerseyviewBrighton-le-Sands L22 6QA0151 931 4619Solution toparking problemhas only shiftedcongestion fromone area toanother, claimextremely popular, particularlyduring the summer weatherwe’ve had this year. This inevitablyleads to traffic issues inthe surrounding residential areas.“After requests from residents andlocal consultations, we introducedseasonal, weekend parkingrestrictions in some roads and this hasbeen generally welcomed by most.“However this has now led to someparking problems in other roads andwe will be looking at this issue in moredetail. Of course, any future changeswill only happen in consultation withresidents and local councillors.”Formby Labour Councillor, NinaKillen said: “There has definitely beenan issue with displacement of cars due1117514NORTH PARKCARPETSWAREHOUSE• Modern Stripes, Saxonys, Wiltons etc1000’s to choose from!• We also supply & fitlaminate & vinyl flooring!• Come and visit our huge showroomwith friendly helpful staff• Family run business• Selection of rugs“We guarantee our fitting service”Fto the recent parking restrictions. Iwant visitors to be able to park but it isunacceptable for them to double parkand block driveways. Residents havebecome prisoners in their own homesat times this summer, which is notacceptable and can’t go on.“There is also an issue with accessfor emergency vehicles – this must bemaintained at all times and that isoften not possible when drivers aredouble–parked.“I have met with council officersmany times regarding this issue and ithas been agreed that a review of allthe streets in the area will be carriedout later this year. I have alsocontacted the council’s Director ofBuilt Environment to carry out of areview of all the council’s land in thearea to see if there is anywheresuitable to provide extra parking butunfortunately no land was identified.“I am mindful that furtherrestrictions could simply mean wedisplace the parking problem evenfurther so I believe any solution mustprovide for some on–street parkingbut restrict the obstructive anddangerous parking. Otherwise we willjust be pushing the problem on andon.”SUMMER SALENOW ON!NEXT TO TASKERS, LONG LANE,AINTREE L9 7ES 0151 521 65531121991From page 1The National Trust is lookingto develop a plan which allowsadaptation to the changingconditions of the dunes andhave looked into a fewsuggestions to suit the problem, such as installing signs toindicate the car park is full longbefore vehicles reach the sitethereby enabling vehicles toturn around before theyapproach the site andpreventing gridlocks alongVictoria road. The asparagus fields were alsoVisit us @ www.ChampNews.com • 3Coastal erosion fearsFormby coastlinesuggested as an overflow carpark, however it has beenindicated that this isn’t anoption because the asparagusfields are a protected a site ofspecial scientific interest.Make her Christmas extra special!Silver Cross Dolls Prams are now available to orderAvailable in 2 models - Oberon & ChatsworthTHESE ARE IN LIMITED SUPPLY SO BE SURE TO SECURE YOURS NOWChatsworthOberonSilver Cross Doll’s Prams are unique.
