This result is a clearindication of the anger felt byfire fighters.”It’s still not too late forcommon sense to prevail ifthe government are willing toPension row hots up – it’sone of the most generous inpublic sector says ministerreturn to the negotiatingtable. None of us want astrike, but we cannotcompromise on public andfire fighter safety.“The union has not yet setstrike dates and will seekfurther dialogue with therelevant governmentministers and fire serviceemployers in an attempt toresolve the dispute. Thegovernment, however, saysthe existing arrangementsare not affordable.Fire minister Brandon Lewissaid: ”This government doesnot believe that industrialaction is necessary. Thepension on offer tofirefighters is one of the mostgenerous in the public sector.“The FBU is creating asmokescreen around theissues of fitness andretirement age to justify theirbehaviour whilst ignoring thefacts.“After two years ofdiscussions and improvedterms, firefighters will stillget one of the most generouspublic service pensionsavailable – £26,000 a year, when including the £7,000state pension.“Someone in the privatesector would have tocontribute twice as much toget the same pension.”1120538
