Now it’s difficult tothink of any.I remember going into a pubin Norfolk with my then dogseveral years ago andcommenting on how nice itwas that dogs were allowedin.The landlord said he had noobjection to well–behaveddogs, pointing out that theydidn’t wreck the toilets orthrow glasses.“There’s only one problemwith dogs,” he said, and myheart sank. “They’ve got nobloody money!”In the Broads area, ofcourse, dogs are actuallywelcome partly BECAUSE ofmoney. Many of theircustomers, whether on boats,in caravans or camping, arethere because they have adog (or dogs).Naturally there are one ortwo snobby pubs that don’tallow them, but oddlyenough they are rarely thereally best ones.Now I don’t censor anylicensee who doesn’t want tohave dogs. It’s his (or her)house, after all. What doesannoy me is telling porkies tojustify their decision.“We do food so it’s illegal tohave dogs in here,” is astandard mantra.Well, no it isn’t – as anyNorfolk pubkeeper will tellyou. It is illegal to haveanimals in the area wherefood is prepared, NOT whereit is eaten.If they simply said: “Peopleeating in here don’t like tosee dogs present so, sorrymate,” I’d understand andfeel no animosity towardshim or her.I remember my dad’s local30–odd years ago, back inthe time of Tina 2 (thepresent one is Tina 4.) At thattime the dog oftenaccompanied us to the pub,where Tina was a firmfavourite – because of theestablishment’s door.It was one of those heavy,revolving things that neededa hefty shove to get themgoing.
