Château Lagrange<br />
<strong>2012</strong>, l’année de Jules Breton à Château Lagrange<br />
In <strong>2012</strong> Château Lagrange, Classified Growth of<br />
Saint-Julien, has chosen to showcase a splendid<br />
painting by the naturalist artist Jules Breton entitled<br />
“Grape Harvest at Lagrange”. Breton actually resided<br />
at the château in the mid-nineteenth century. A series<br />
of conferences and theme tours are planned for both<br />
professional visitors and the general public.<br />
The Theme:<br />
The rediscovery of a painting entitled “Les vendanges<br />
à Lagrange” by Jules Breton showing the<br />
grape harvest at the estate, the original of which is<br />
currently exhibited at the Joslyn Museum in Omaha<br />
(Nebraska, USA), has given Château Lagrange the<br />
occasion to highlight 150 years of innovation and<br />
evolution in the vine growing and wine making of the<br />
Médoc area. The history of the Médoc vineyard, within<br />
the climatic, technical, social and political context<br />
from the mid-nineteenth century to this day, will be<br />
treated with this work of art as a centerpiece. The<br />
painting was commissioned in 1862 by the estate<br />
owner, Home secretary to King Louis-Philippe, Count<br />
Charles Tanneguy Duchâtel, a nobleman we learn<br />
was passionate both about art and vine growing.<br />

Le château Lagrange, Grand Cru classé de Saint-<br />
Julien, met à l’honneur en <strong>2012</strong> une peinture<br />
‘les vendanges à Lagrange’ de Jules Breton,<br />
peintre naturaliste ayant séjourné au château dans<br />
le milieu XIXème siècle. Une série de conférences<br />
ainsi que des visites thématiques sont prévues pour<br />
les professionnels et le grand public.<br />
Le thème :<br />
La redécouverte d’une peinture intitulée ‘Les vendanges<br />
à Lagrange’ de Jules Breton, dont l’original<br />
est exposé au Joslyn Museum à Omaha (Etats-<br />
Unis,Nebraska), a donné l’occasion au château<br />
Lagrange de mettre en avant le thème des 150 ans<br />
d’évolution et d’innovation du milieu viti-vinicole en<br />
Médoc. C’est au travers de cet œuvre, commandée<br />
en 1862 par le propriétaire de l’époque, le Comte<br />
Charles Tanneguy Duchâtel, ministre de l’Intérieur<br />
du roi Louis-Philippe, passionné d’art et de viticulture,<br />
que seront évoquées l’historique du vignoble<br />
médocain et plus particulièrement les conditions climatiques,<br />
techniques, sociales et politiques du milieu<br />
du XIXème siècle à aujourd’hui.
