Corn in the rest of the world<br />
Its introduction to Europe was in the early sixteenth<br />
century when Christopher Columbus returned from<br />
America. It was widely accepted because of its resemblance<br />
to regional cereals (such as wheat and<br />
sorghum). It wasn’t until the early nineteenth century,<br />
when production and consumption increased<br />
due to its various uses in industry, such as alcoholic<br />
beverages, food sweeteners and even fuel that the<br />
grain became widely popular.<br />
Corn is currently the most widely produced cereal in<br />
the world, surpassing rice and wheat. Its consumption<br />
has three types of applications: food, fodder and<br />
raw materials for industry. Did you know that if you<br />
set the global production of corn in regular trucks,<br />
they would circumvent the world five times?<br />

El maíz en el resto del mundo<br />
Su introducción a Europa fue a principios del siglo<br />
XVI cuando Colón regresó de América. Tuvo una<br />
buena aceptación debido a su semejanza con cereales<br />
regionales (como el trigo y sorgo), pero fue<br />
hasta principios del siglo XIX donde su producción y<br />
consumo se incrementó por sus diferentes usos en<br />
la industria, como la elaboración de bebidas alcohólicas,<br />
edulcorantes alimenticios y combustible.<br />
Actualmente, es el cereal de mayor producción en<br />
todo el mundo, superando al arroz y al trigo. Su consumo<br />
tiene 3 tipos de aplicaciones: alimento, forraje<br />
y materia prima para la industria, siendo el primero<br />
el mayor conocido. ¿Sabías que si se montara la<br />
producción mundial de maíz en camiones de carga,<br />
éstos darían 5 vueltas completas a la tierra?
