The arts have long been a source of vitality,
self-expression and cultural exchange in the
Evanston community. The abundance and
quality of artistic offerings is impressive for a
City our size. On any given evening, one can
attend an art opening, theatrical production,
dance performance, poetry reading, concert, or
fi lm, to mention only a few.
The Evanston Art Center has contributed to this
rich stew of arts and culture since its founding in
1929. Over eighty years later we operate under
many of the original guiding principles, one
of the most important being an emphasis on
community engagement and outreach.
Recently, we’ve broadened our community ties,
stretching from Evanston to Pilsen, initiating
conversations that have led to interdisciplinary,
inclusive, and innovative programming.
Our contemporary arts forum, ‘Dialogic
Communities’ invites the public to read an
article on our web site and then join us for an
informal discussion. Our springBoard group
is introducing the fi rst Evanston Youth Film
Festival. We facilitated an artist-in-residence
program at a District 65 school. In spring of
2013, we’ll host a weekend dedicated to the
often misunderstood art of street art. With
programs featuring the spoken word, hip hop,
graffi ti artists, and participation from arts
educators and the community, this should be a
weekend to remember, and, hopefully, one that
reaches out to the youth in our community who
never thought the Evanston Art Center was here
for them.
At the Evanston Art Center, we realize we can
accomplish so much more if we can leverage
our assets as a community. Your involvement
is valued. Your suggestions are welcome. Your
fi nancial support is essential for us to continue
our good work in the community. Please
consider a gift to our Annual Appeal this year.
Thank you for your continued support and
interest in keeping the arts alive.
MINDFUL CREATIVITY
Laura Mae Noble
Saturday 1/19, 10am-4pm
Sunday 1/20, 1pm-4pm
2North
In this weekend workshop, we will explore the
basic ground of all creative practice through
mindfulness meditation, and activities bringing
us into relationship with the present moment.
We will explore how our perception, through our
senses--hearing, vision, tasting, touch, and smell--
connect us to what is, before we develop thoughts
or concepts. This is simply about seeing things
as they are, and expressing or acting from that
awareness. Activities may involve some standing
meditation, a little walking or movement, some
visual exercises, drawing, writing, object arranging
and calligraphy. This is not a technical art class,
but rather for developing skill and familiarity with
creative mind. No “artistic skill” necessary, only an
interest in developing clarity, joy and creativity in
your daily life.
the dye. Design and create wearable art. Most
Tuesday 6:30pm-9:00pm
Digital Lab2
This popular program has been customized
for the EAC community. Its multi-dimensional
approach makes looking at and discussing art
really exciting. We will examine signifi cant events
in art using many high-resolution images. Context
is considered alongside technique. Topics include:
How artists’ rejection from the Paris Salon of 1863
led to Impressionism? Were artists competitive
or collaborative and in what ways did they draw
inspiration from the past. The 1913 NY Armory
Show brought Euro Modernism (Picasso, Munch,
Matisse) to USA: how did that affect 20th century
Digital Lab2
Attendees are encouraged to attend Level I. The
EAC tailored, “Art Excitement” continues, leading
up to how contemporary art has been affected by
earlier periods, technology and more. Discussion
is not limited to how the art evolved: the way
viewers perceive artworks took a big leap, i.e. we
may consider a Raphael differently than a Koons
or Warhol? Surrealism was short lived, and not for
everyone: yet, we see its fi ngerprints daily in all
media. Pop art has had a similar fate. Additional
topics may include developments in portraiture
and “art as a metaphor”. Both courses include
observations from the global art markets.
Sue Sommers
Tuesday 6:30pm-9pm
This is an experimental class, one in which
short mediation and watercolor are central and
interrelated. The focus on short meditations (led by
the instructor who also leads meditations at C.J.
Jung Center) allows painting to approach a deeper,
riskier and more playful awareness. Watercolor
demands that we are present to the colors, the
fl ow and the expansiveness that makes watercolor
unique. Working with watercolor we examine the
myriad ways the medium can be expressed. Bring
some paints and brushes, a spray bottle and small
EXPERIMENTAL PRINTMAKING SEMINAR
Michael Jackson
Tuesday 7pm-10pm
Noyes Print Studio
This class is either structured or informal to suit
the requirements of both beginners and repeat
students. The chemistry of class dynamic is
integral; those making their fi rst prints mix with
more experienced printmakers. From basic
transfer drawing, ideas are developed across
media, including drypoint and carborundum
collograph, screen monoprinting and polyester
plate lithography, using both oil and water soluble
techniques. Transforming the humblest doodle
into something more exciting through the alchemy
of diverse printmaking procedures is entirely
possible in this course, as well as breathing new life
into more advanced conceptions. The lofty term
seminar here is taken directly from the latin “seed
plot” i.e. a place to sow ideas in a free thinking
environment.
SPECIAL PROGRAM:
Street Arts As Public Pedagogy:
Learning From The Margins
May 3, 4 and 5
The goal of these events is to highlight cultural
efforts by those working in the street realms of
hip-hop culture and the arts so that we may grow
visibility and awareness of these practices for
audiences who may not have direct contact with
them. We also want to shift how our communities
view this activity, education, and art. Street arts and
graffi ti in particular, is the visual artistic component
of hip-hop often serving as visual representation
of its vocabularies, styles, techniques, colors, and
themes.
The Evanston Art Center is proud to be a part
of this yearlong series of Chicago street art
exhibitions/actions instigated by the National
Museum of Mexican Art.
*LINDA KRAMER: A RETROSPECTIVE
June 2 – July 7
Opening reception on Sunday, June 2
1pm – 4pm
Few contemporary artists have been as prolifi c
in making her own work and, at the same time,
as active at championing the work of others in
the Chicago artists’ community as Linda Kramer.
This retrospective showcases artwork that spans
several decades and, in spite of the variety of
mediums and metaphors employed, reveals a
strong and singular voice.
*IN THREE MOVING PARTS
July 21 – August 25
Opening reception on Sunday, July 21
1pm – 4pm
This exhibition, which features the paintings of
three artists long connected to Chicago, Matthew
Ballou, Norbert Marszalek and Timothy P.
Vermeulen, explores the notions of the ‘Self’ as a
pictorial, narrative and symbolic construction in the
context of representational imagery.
* Exhibition funding provided by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency, and the EAC’s general
membership.
* This project is partially funded by the Evanston Arts Council, in partnership with the City of Evanston and
Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
