Corporate governance statement9.3.2. Notification of major shareholdingsOn 1 September 2008, the new Belgian regulation ontransparency entered into force. In accordance with thetransitional scheme, all GBL shareholders whose interest asof 1 September 2008 reached or exceeded a legal thresholdwere obliged to submit notification thereof no later than31 October 2008.Subsequently, the shareholders will be obliged to submita declaration whenever their voting rights either exceed ordrop below 5%, 10%, 15% (and other multiples of 5%) of totalvoting rights.GBL’s Articles of Association do not lay down a declarationthreshold higher than 5% or 10%.Accordingly, on 30 October 2008, GBL received notificationfrom its controlling shareholders concerning their interest inGBL as of 1 September 2008. Some of the mainbeneficiaries or areas of support were:Medical research and equipmentA total of around EUR 175,000 was granted to severalhospitals and laboratories for the purpose of promotingmedical research and financing the acquisition of equipment.Fonds Charles-Albert FrèreA grant of EUR 500,000 was made to the Fonds Charles-Albert Frère. The aim of this association is to aid all personssuffering from a physical, mental or social disability and to thevictims of poverty.Culture and EducationSome EUR 195,000 were granted to different private andpublic bodies in support of cultural (artistic and educational)and educational programmes.Human resourcesGBL’s human resources policy is based on diversity, equalopportunity, fairness and responsibility. The group employsa small team of 32 people and the use of specific employeeconsultation procedures would therefore be superfluous.
