Even as first respondersrushed into help at bothscenes, much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> initialcare to <strong>the</strong> injured was providedby friends, neighborsand bystanders who weretrained in CPR and first aid.Whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> emergency iscommunity-wide andinvolves numerous injuries,or involves a single individualbeing hurt at home, it is vitalthat someone close by knowswhat to do when such anemergency occurs.“Getting yourself and yourfamily more prepared for disasterscan bring peace <strong>of</strong>mind during trying times andcan help save someone’s lifeduring future emergencies,”said Tim Yenrick, regionalCEO <strong>of</strong> American Red Cross<strong>of</strong> Northwest Ohio. “Takingan action like downloadingour first aid, taking a first aidclass or building a disastersupply kit can help peoplefeel empowered to act whendisaster strikes.”The American Red Crosshas numerous ways peoplecan get <strong>the</strong> information andtraining <strong>the</strong>y need to be ableto help when an emergencyoccurs and urges everyone tobe better prepared by takingadvantage <strong>of</strong> training andmobile apps available to teach<strong>the</strong>m what to do when someoneneeds assistance.The Red Cross has classesavailable that emphasizehands-on-learning <strong>of</strong> first aid,cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) and use <strong>of</strong> an automatedeexternal defibrillator(AED). The courses teachsomeone <strong>the</strong> skills <strong>the</strong>y needto help save a life. Participantslearn how to respond tocommon first aid emergencies,how to respond to cardiacand breathing emergenciesin adults and how to useAEDs.There also are optionsavailable to learn how to helpinfants and children.To register for <strong>the</strong>se classes,visit <strong>the</strong> Web site at redcross.org/takeaclassor call 1-800-REDCROSS.Family and householdmembers also can learn howto prevent and respond toemergencies by taking <strong>the</strong>new Red Cross Family FirstAid and CPR online course.The cost is $30. Healways said <strong>the</strong>y were onlyallowed to discuss <strong>the</strong>world’s problems but neversolve <strong>the</strong>m so <strong>the</strong>y alwayshad something to talk abouttomorrow.He battled a rare diseasehis entire life and throughall <strong>the</strong> ups, downs and painnever lost his sense <strong>of</strong>humor. This was adecisive defeat that led directlyto <strong>the</strong> Treaty <strong>of</strong>Greeneville <strong>the</strong> followingyear, which ended 20 years <strong>of</strong>conflict between <strong>the</strong> Americansand <strong>the</strong> Ohio Indians.Mr. Winkler has writtenmany works on <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong>Roman, English and Americanlaw. He also explores forgottenhistorical sites in Ohioand neighboring states. He hashad a varied career–from operatinga shoe store to teachinglaw. Among his talks, hehas given lectures on medievalhistory at Oxford andbeen quoted by <strong>the</strong> U. S.Supreme Court.He lives in Columbus,Ohio, with his wife <strong>of</strong> morethan 40 years.
