THE TORTURE OF THE IRONS.These were iron hooks on which <strong>the</strong> Christians weresuspended, and iron claws that served to tear <strong>the</strong>m totlie bone and to <strong>the</strong>ir very entrails. O<strong>the</strong>r instrumentswere destined to pull out all <strong>the</strong>ir teeth, one after <strong>the</strong>o<strong>the</strong>r. Their flesh was lacerated with iron combs, or<strong>the</strong>y were flayed. They were tied to tlie ground and .were. cut with blows <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>. hatchet, or <strong>the</strong>ir memberswere gradually cut to pieces, from <strong>the</strong> toes till <strong>the</strong>irthighs, and from <strong>the</strong> fingers to <strong>the</strong> breasts, so thatnothing was left but <strong>the</strong> trunk. They were stretchedwith tlieir backs against a wheel that made <strong>the</strong>m moveon sharp irons fixed in <strong>the</strong> ground ; or <strong>the</strong>y were tiedupon a table, <strong>the</strong>n disembowelled, and <strong>the</strong>ir intestinestaken out.5. OTHER TORTURES.The martyrs were also tortured on <strong>the</strong> rack, and witho<strong>the</strong>r torments. Sometimes <strong>the</strong>y were exposed to <strong>the</strong>sun, <strong>the</strong>ir bodies being rubbed with honey so that <strong>the</strong>ymight be stung by <strong>the</strong> flies and wasps. They weremade to die in different ways. They were stoned, be-Iieaded, strangled, drowned. There were some wl~owere tied to two trees that had been bent by main force,whicli when released would tear <strong>the</strong>m to pieces. O<strong>the</strong>rstied in a bag were thrown into <strong>the</strong> sea, or thrown to <strong>the</strong>dogs or wild beasts.
