PROTO FASTFACTS In Service: 1952 – early 80s; Firstunit (EMD Demonstrator #990, soldto SP in 1953, #5308; later #1518)preserved.Variations: Built with and withoutdynamic brakes; railroad-specificappliances.Primary Assignment: Local andbranchline freight.Originally intended for use on branchlines, EMD launched its Special Dutyseries in 1952 with the SD7. This locoalso introduced the three-axle Flexi-Coil truck with its powered centeraxle. This was a major departure fromearlier three-axle designs where anunpowered center axle was used tospread the engine’s weight over morewheels, reducing the strain on thelighter rail and lower capacity bridgesfound on branches. EMD’s design notonly spread the weight but the extratraction motors provided more powerto get trains started.
