Realizingthat railroads needed more powerfulswitchers, the United States RailwayAdministration developed plans for anall-new 0-8-0. Up-to-date in allrespects, these big switchers were theequals in power of many road freightlocomotives from just a few yearsearlier. The USRA 0-8-0 was well likedby railroads that received it and 175were completed before governmentcontrol ended in 1920. More successcame in later years, as 35 differentroads eventually copied the design.
