No waivers are necessary for physicians under51 years of age that hold current board certifications incertain specialties as part of a pilot program.• Pass a physical examination and meet relevant suitabilityrequirementsYou must hold one of the following degrees:• M.D. from a U.S. program that is accredited by the LiaisonCommittee on Medical Education sponsored by theAssociation of American Medical Colleges and the AmericanMedical Association (AMA), or a foreign medical school thatis listed on the International Medical Education Directory ofthe Foundation for Advancement of International MedicalEducation and Research and passed the ECFMG requirements• D.O. degree from a program that is accredited by theCommission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of theAmerican Osteopathic Association (AOA)You must also have:• Completed one year of postgraduate medical education (e.g.,internship or first year of residency training) in a programthat is accredited by the Accreditation Council of GraduateMedical Education of the AMA or the Bureau of OsteopathicEducation of the AOA• A current, unrestricted, and valid medical license from oneof the 50 States; Washington, DC; the Commonwealth ofPuerto Rico; the U.S. Virgin Islands; or GuamMedical Student Opportunity:Commissioned Corps—COSTEPThe U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps offersmedical students an opportunity to serve their country in theJunior COSTEP Program while completing their education.Medical students who apply should have completed at leastone year of medical school. Generally, medical students applySeptember to December for summer jobs for the following year.Experiences range from 31-120 days. Interviews are conductedby specific agencies either in person or by telephone. Usualagency placements are with NIH and IHS.
