A screw shaft slowlyrotates inside the compaction chamber and continuouslyconveys the sludge through the chamber to the presszone with pneumatic counter-pressure cone at the upperend of the chamber where the sludge is pushed by theconveying screw past the pressure cone into thedischarge chamber. Due to the conical shape of the screwshaft and decreasing pitch of the screw flights the volumeof material between the flights is reduced and the sludgepressed against the inner screen surface so that thesludge is dewatered and the water pressed out throughthe sieve. The pressing force is adjustable via the positionand counterpressure of the pressure cone.
