SONNEBORN ® PRODUCT DATASILFLEX ®YieldWet and Dry Film ThicknessFT 2 /GAL (M 2 /L) AVERAGE DRY FILM AVERAGE WET FILMPER COAT MILS (MM) MILS (MM)50 (1.23) 14 – 15 (0.35 – 0.38) 32 – 33 (0.81 – 0.83)60 (1.47) 12 – 13 (0.30 – 0.33) 26 – 27 (0.66 – 0.68)80 (1.96) 9 – 10 (0.23 – 0.25) 20 – 21 (0.51 – 0.53)100 (2.45) 7 – 8 (0.18 – 0.20) 16 – 17 (0.41 – 0.43)Coverage rates are theoretical on smooth-surfaced, properly primed substrates.IMPORTANT: Warranty applications require a minimum 12 dry mils (0.30 mm) film thickness.10. Rout out dynamic or moving cracks to aminimum of 1/4 by 1/4" (6 by 6 mm), then fill withNP 1 or Sonolastic ® 150. Once sealant is tooled andcured, proceed with crack repair as describedpreviously.11. Repair cracks and treat back side of parapets inthe same manner as exterior walls, terminating atroof counter flashings. If top of parapet wall isexposed masonry, apply a coat of PatchingCompound to create a smooth, well-draining surface.Recaulking of reglet may be required.12. Block and other porous surfaces should beclean, dry, and free of contaminants. Fill concreteblock faces with 1 nylon brush coat of Block Filler749. Apply by working material into pores, crevices, and voids. Allow Block Filler to dry, typically 24 – 48hours, before proceeding. Coverage rate depends onthe porosity and texture of the block surface. Applyto dry, cured block and mortar only. See product datasheet for complete application instructions.Priming1. Prime all uncoated concrete and masonrysubstrates (except those treated with Block Filler749) as follows: dilute Silflex ® 10% with clean waterand apply at the rate of 80 – 100 ft 2 /gallon(2.0 – 2.5 m 2 /L).2. If an existing coating is properly cleaned andchalking still occurs, it must be primed with ChalkySurface Primer VOC. An existing coating totally freeof chalk does not require priming. Allow ChalkySurface Primer VOC to dry approximately 2 – 4hours before topcoating.Application1. Apply Silflex ® finish coat at the appropriate rateslisted under Coverage section.2. Apply the finish coat in a pinhole-free, continuousmembrane for waterproofing integrity.ROLLER1. Use a medium synthetic-nap (3/4") quality rollercover for smooth surfaces. Use a long synthetic naproller for rough surfaces.2. Completely saturate the roller and keep it loadedwith the coating to build the required mils. Never dryroll except for touch up.3. Roll the coating in a consistent fanlike pattern toachieve uniform mil thickness. Stroke variations mayresult in an uneven texture.BRUSH1. Application by brush is recommended only forsmall inaccessible areas, e.g., on touch-ups.2. Use nylon or synthetic-bristled brushes only.SPRAY1. For spray equipment recommendations, referto the equipment manufacturer. As a generalguideline, use an airless sprayer providing upto 3,300 psi (22.75 MPa) pressure and utilize0.03 – 0.035 tip size.2. A 10% spray loss should be anticipated.3. On porous substrates, pinholing is an indicationof entrapped air. Backrolling is required to eliminatepinholing.Drying TimeDry time is 12 hours under normal conditions(75° F or 24° C and 50% relative humidity). Dryingtime will vary with application rates, temperature, and humidity.Clean UpClean Silflex ® from brushes, rollers, sprayers, andother equipment with water immediately afterapplication. For Best Performance• Apply a 4 by 4 ft (1.2 by 1.2 m) test area toverify acceptable color and adhesion beforeproceeding with any project.• Keep from freezing.• Do not apply when surface or ambienttemperatures are less than 40° F (4° C) or areexpected to go below 40° F (4° C) for 12 hoursfollowing application.• Do not apply coatings in rain, snow, or fog.• Do not thin Silflex ® finish coat.• Hot or dry conditions limit working time andaccelerate drying; cool or damp conditionsextend working time and retard drying and mayrequire added measures for protection againstwind, dust, dirt, rain, and freezing.• Minimum dry time between coats is 12 hours at75° F (24° C) and 50% or less relative humidity.• Color formulas containing organic colorants aresusceptible to fading in exterior applications.Refer to Sonneborn ® tint manual for guidance.• Ultra-deep and neutral-base colors are mainlyintended for use as accents in small areas only;they are not guaranteed against fading.• Slower drying time should be expected whenusing ultra-deep or neutral base colors.• Do not apply to traffic-bearing or flat surfaces.• On porous substrates, pinholing is an indicationof entrapped air; backroll to eliminate pinholing(overaggressive backrolling, however, may createpinholes).• Iron-rich slag aggregate containing block, mortar,or brick may cause discoloration through Silflex ® .Consult Technical Service for recommendations.
