least a 2.5 overall GPA and perform in a manner satisfactory to the employer and <strong>Lamar</strong><strong>University</strong>. During each co-op work term, the student is enrolled in a three semester hour CareerDevelopment course and is considered a full time student at <strong>Lamar</strong> <strong>University</strong>. The CareerDevelopment course taken is an engineering course but is not part of the engineering degreeplan. An Industrial <strong>Engineering</strong> co-op student who successfully completes three CareerDevelopment courses receives credit for one three credit hour elective.Minority <strong>Engineering</strong> and RetentionThe Minority <strong>Engineering</strong> <strong>program</strong> focuses on recruiting and mentoring traditionallyunderrepresented African, Hispanic and Native American students. Through scholarships,internships, tutoring and networking opportunities, the <strong>program</strong> seeks to keep open dialoguewith the students it sponsors and help ensure their academic and professional success.The Minority Recruiting and Retention Program partners with the National Action Council forMinorities in <strong>Engineering</strong> (NACME) and other organizations and companies such as NSBE(National Society of Black Engineers), TAME (Texas Alliance for Minorities in <strong>Engineering</strong>)and Eastman Chemical to provide scholarships and intern opportunities for eligible students.Before an academic challenge becomes an obstacle, the director of the Minority Recruiting andRetention Program keeps an open door – whether to tutor students, help them apply forscholarships, or deal with financial and unexpected contingencies.The <strong>program</strong> encourages students to join professional associations such as NSBE which has alocal chapter at <strong>Lamar</strong> <strong>University</strong>, and TAME which hosts GT-TAME sponsored activitiesthrough <strong>Lamar</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Students have the opportunity to travel to regional and nationalmeetings and network with company representatives at career fairs. Through such affiliations,students gain friendships, form <strong>study</strong> groups, and begin professional networking that provesvaluable upon graduation.II - 154
