In this way DSR makes for more relaxeddescents and enhances active safety during off-road driving.ON&OFFROAD package (option in combination with theAIRMATIC package, not available for ML 63 AMG). Activatedin an instant, the ON&OFFROAD package allows the driverto exercise even greater control over the handling of theM-Class, whether on or off the road. If a hazard is detected the driver is given both visualand acoustic warnings. During simultaneous braking thestandard-fit Adaptive Brake Assist can place at the driver’sdisposal precisely the amount of braking power which isrequired to prevent an impending collision wherever possible.In the event of danger: PRE-SAFE® system (standard).The PRE-SAFE® anticipatory occupant protection systemcan detect critical driving situations as they start to arisePRE-SAFE® can recognise critical driving situations and initiate preventivemeasures to protect the occupantsand initiate preventive measures. The front seat belts canbe reversibly tensioned, while open side windows or theoptional sliding sunroof can be closed, depending on thedriving situation and the car’s specification. These measuresallow the seat belts and airbags to be deployed aseffectively as possible should an accident occur. What’smore, the optionally available Memory function can movethe front passenger seat into a favourable position. If theaccident is avoided, the seat belts revert to their originalpositions while the other components can be adjusted tothe desired position. The system is then ready for actionagain straightaway.In an accident: pedestrian protection with active bonnet(standard). The active bonnet system can reduce the riskof injury to pedestrians and cyclists in a collision. If sensorsin the front bumper detect an impact, the bonnet can beraised by pyrotechnic means. The resulting increase in spacebetween the comparatively soft bonnet and the hard componentsin the engine compartment reduces the severity ofthe impact and can therefore diminish the risk of severeinjuries.In an accident: restraint systems (standard). Three-pointseat belts, belt tensioners, belt force limiters and airbagsare optimally coordinated with each other at Mercedes-Benz,so as to keep injuries to a minimum wherever possible. Byway of example, the occupants in the M-Class are protectedby seven airbags which can help prevent or reduce therisk of injury in a collision. For the passengers’ protectiontwo adaptive front airbags are fitted, and depending onthe severity of the accident they are triggered in two stages.In addition, the M-Class has sidebags (combined thorax/pelvisbags) for the driver and front passenger in the frontseat backrests, plus two generously sized windowbagsover both rows of seats. The kneebag can further reducethe load on the driver during an accident. As an optionsidebags are available in the rear. If the crash sensors detectan accident, the seat belts are tensioned in a flash bypyrotechnic means in order to keep the passengers securelyin their seats. The belt force limiter, meanwhile, relaxesthe belt in accordance with the prevailing situation, so as notto place too much of a strain on the thorax of the occupants.After an accident: Mercedes-Benz emergency call system(component of COMAND Online). The climate control system for the M-Class is therefore exceptionallyversatile and can be adjusted to meet the needs of each individual occupantTHERMATIC (standard). The THERMATIC automatic climatecontrol uses sensors to control the temperature for thedriver and front passenger automatically. Further standardfeatures include air recirculation, a cooled glove compartmentand a combination filter for particulate matter. Thereare two additional air outlets for the rear compartmenton the rear end of the centre console.THERMOTRONIC (option). This automatic climatecontrol system allows the driver, front passenger and rearpassengers to set the temperatures for their respectiveareas of the vehicle independently.
