VISTA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICTCLASS TITLE:<strong>BUS</strong> <strong>DRIVER</strong> <strong>TRAINER</strong>BASIC FUNCTION:Under the direction of the Director of Transportation, plan, coordinate and organize abus driver training program; review and evaluate bus routes and stops to ensure against safetyhazards; drive a bus on assigned routes.REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:Assist in planning bus routes and bus stops; ride with bus drivers, observing the need fornew bus stops or changes in routes; recommend bus routes and the assignment ofdrivers to effectively and efficiently maximize the utilization of equipment and personnel.Plan, develop and implement training programs for bus drivers to assure safe drivingpractices are adhered to in accordance with <strong>District</strong> and State Transportation policies,rules and regulations.Train and assist new drivers concerning student behavior management problems andsituations.Assist in the selection and evaluation of bus drivers as assigned.Drive buses of varying sizes and complexity over designated routes in accordance withtime schedules.Prepare and maintain a variety of bus driver records, including drivers license andcertificate expiration, medical expiration and training hours required for the renewal ofthe bus driver certificate.Plan, develop and conduct school bus driver certificate renewal training programs;conduct safe driving and safe working methods and procedures training programsperiodically and as specifically required.Conduct bus inspections with bus drivers and report damage, vandalism, malfunctionsand defects.Assure that bus drivers are properly licensed and maintain a continuous liaison with thehighway patrol relative to bus driver license and renewal requirements.Coordinate the annual inspection of fire extinguishers and assure the first aid kits aremaintained with required units.Perform related duties as assigned.November 1987EWING & COMPANY


Bus Driver Trainer – continued Page 2KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:KNOWLEDGE OF:Safe driving practices and methods.Principles, methods, techniques and strategies for the training of school bus drivers.Provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and laws applicable to the operation ofvehicles in the transportation of students and in the training of school bus drivers.Principles, methods and procedures related to a large pupil transportation system.Technical aspects of field of specialty.ABILITY TO:Plan, develop and implement bus driver and safety programs.Plan and organize effective and efficient bus routes and schedules.Operate a school bus over designated routes.Maintain accurate records.Understand and follow oral and written directions.Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.Observe legal and defensive driving practices.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school plus five years of experiencein the operation of a school bus; or two years experience as a bus driver and three yearsoperating vehicles requiring a Class A or B commercial driver’s license; or two years experienceas a bus driver and one year as a behind-the-wheel trainer including some experience trainingschool bus drivers.LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:Valid California driver’s license; possession of a <strong>School</strong> Bus Driver’s Certificate issuedby the California Highway Patrol; completion of a Certified State Department of Education DriverTrainer Course; valid medical card.WORKING CONDITIONS:Indoor and outdoor environment; subject to driving in buses while training new drivers;subject to driving a school bus under varying weather conditions and distractions from studentriders.November 1987EWING & COMPANYRevised PC Mtg: 12/10/96
