There is a lot ofwork around youth in performancebut very little about the ageingperformer, especially drag queens.“I have a lot of friends in thisbusiness who seem to reassess lifechoices as they get older.“My research explores the social, political and cultural issues intoageing in non–heterosexualcontexts and personalrelationships.”His work, ‘Council House MovieStar’, illustrates this. It is aperformance showing the weirdand wonderful characteristics ofthe everyday life of Gale Force, anageing drag queen and failed childstar of Omo washing powder in herrun–down council house.Mark added: “I want people to seeMark Edward as Gale ForceCode NAthe private life of Gale Force, to geta glimpse of what it’s like behindclosed doors, away from the brightlights, and to have a betterunderstanding of the issues facingageing, gay performers.“Gale’s working–class rootsexpose a real vulnerability which Iwant to explore.“I was a drag queen myself in the1980s and although I’m out of thegame I have seen a lot of changes. The night time economy haschanged because of the new pubculture and many UK drag queenshave sought work abroad.“For those who try to findemployment in differentprofessions they find their skillsaren’t up to date so they return totheir art form. Personalrelationships crumble because ofthe unsociable hours they work.Precarious“Drag queens have a precariousrelationship within contemporarygay culture.”Mark, who has recently carried outextensive research on ageingperformers, has himself been at thereceiving end of negativecomments. “I’m getting oldermyself and in a way my research is anarrative about myself.“Ageing performers are on thereceiving end of comments aboutbeing past it, lacking stamina, plusthere are visible signs of ageing youhave to contend with.“There is a lot of discriminationand sustaining a performancecareer is very challenging once youhit 35. I argue that older performershave just as much to offer as theyounger generation.
