The <strong>Champion</strong> • Wednesday 19 June 2013Councilors toconsiderplaying fields‘transfer’ planReport by Henry JamesCOUNCILLORS were last night(Tuesday, June 18) due toconsider a proposal to transferthe Abbey Lane playing fields inBurscough to a community sportsclub at a cabinet meeting of theborough council.The proposed move is part of anopportunity to attract externalgrant funding to support drainageimprovements works to the site.It has been recommended thatthe assistant director ofcommunity services and theassistant director of housing,regeneration and estates beauthorised to grant a long–termlease at a peppercorn rent toBurscough Juniors Football Clubfor the changing room andpitches located at Abbey Laneplaying fields. Also thatauthorisation be granted toidentify and engage a contractorto carry out the drainage workson the site.Abbey Lane playing fields site,also known as the Thomas GalvinSports Ground, contains six adultfootball pitches and two cricketpitches. Building changingaccommodation consists of 12team changing rooms, separatechanging for officials, acommunity/training room, firstaid room and a small kitchenarea.Burscough Juniors FC wasformed in 2002 following thejoining together of Burscough FCand Burscough Dynamos andprovide football for boys and girlsfrom age six onwards. BurscoughJuniors has since separated fromBurscough FC and now operatesindependently from the seniorclub.The borough council hasarrangements with a number ofsports clubs across the boroughwho are engaged in long–termlease/partnership arrangementsfor council–owned facilities.SecurityGot an interesting story to tell?Champ Newsdesk 01704 392400Council officers have met withclub officials, Burscough ParishCouncil, Liverpool FA and officersfrom the Football Foundation todiscuss lease and investmentoptions for the Abbey Lane Site.The club require security oftenure of at least 25 years in orderto secure the Football Foundationgrant funding.
