How should Ideal with this?Should I like to sell my daughterinto slavery, as it suggests inExodus 21:7, what is a fair priceBrolliesto therescueA short sharpshower did notdampen the spiritsof those taking partin the annualNewburgh Fairparade around thevillage at theweekend.Picture by MartynSnape.Code: 1059733.After reading the article onSkelmersdale having nocemetery/crematorium(Champion, June 12) I felt Ineeded to write in.I have been speaking to otherpeople in the area and we feelthat we are being ignored andforgotten.I am in my 70s and I want toknow that when I get to the end ofmy life I can be buried close to myfamily, so that in hard times theycan come and visit me. Visitingthe grave of a loved one can bringyou comfort. We have lots of green space, more than enough to make ain this day and age?I have a neighbour who insistson working on the Sabbath, asmany others do today. Exodus35:2 clearly states she should beput to death. Am I morallyobliged to do so?And so on and so on...Seriously though, to use theBible as an infallible law bookthat needs no interpretation isclearly an absurd position to hold. And it really matters when itprompts people to persecute theirneighbours, as has been theChurch’s treatment ofhomosexuals. It might be interesting toPICTURE of the weekIt’s time town had itsown final resting placegraveyard. It’s ridiculous we donot have one in the town. The Pippins Lane site is a poorchoice anyway, they need tocreate a new one. With unemployment and lowincome the way it is, it is hassleand money to go to visit a lovedone buried elsewhere and as weare out of the way in the area, ourtransport links aren’t the best. It’s about time people listened toRosie Cooper on this and sorted itout before any more families facethe turmoil of loved ones beingburied far away.Mr Gibbons, Skelmersdaleremember that when WilliamWilberforce openly campaignedagainst slavery, his opponents inthe Houses of Parliament quotedLeviticus as justification forslaves.I cannot recall Jesus evercondemning anyone for theirsexual orientation. He was more concerned withpreaching and healing, workingamong the down–and–outs insociety to make them feel lovedand empowered. He was always at pains to stressthe love for one another that weshould have.To deny that love to any humanIt was predictable to hear fromthat ardent EU cheer–leader,Chris Davies, Lib–Dem MEP,banging on about how the EU isgood for us.The facts are quite different. There are 27 member states inthe EU and more than 156countries who are not. And thesingle market is actuallyshrinking while the rest of theworld is growing. As a result, we now exportmore of our goods outside theEU, which is good for jobs aswell as our balance sheet. And if it were not for the openborders policy we would have agreater number of employmentbeing on the grounds of theirsexuality is wrong. It always worries me whenpeople take parts of the Bible thatsuit them and conveniently blotout the ones that don’t.A minister in Skelmersdale oncetold me that the Bible was a toolfor living, to be interpreted for thetime and age in which we live andto remember that it was writtenmore than 2,000 years ago for aprimitive people in a primitiveage; but to always rememberwhat Jesus taught – ‘to love oneanother as oneself.’Jenny Ashcroft, Skelmersdalewww.champnews.com/pixonlineEU is not the UK’s best optionfor our own nationals. Our membership costs the UKtaxpayer over £53million everyday, plus £billions more inregulations and tax costs, money that should be spent tothe benefit of Britain and theBritish people and notsquandered on anundemocratic institution (theyhave not had their books signedoff in 18 years). There is a much bigger worldoutside the inward–looking EUoffering greater opportunitiesand prosperity, which is whatBritain should be part of.Phillip Griffiths, UKIP North WestExtension bidmakes a mockeryof planning systemThe owners of Whitemoss tip site still want amassive extension and are trying to getaround our previous victory by getting itapproved through the National PlanningInfrastructure process, which bypassesLancashire County Council which hadremoved it from its draft waste plan. This would increase landfilling to 7.5 timesits current level and extend its life to around20 years. The National Planning Infrastructurerequires the developer to run the publicconsultation and compile a report that goesto the Planning Inspectorate. It is absolutely bizarre that objections needto go to the company rather than agovernment body.People who live near waste sites are moreat risk of ill health and Skelmersdale isdownwind from the Whitemoss tip.In order to create space for this hazardouswaste, an open–cast coal mine would needto be developed. This would involve topsoil, storing it andextracting the coal before dumping canstart. In 1977 Lancashire County Council said thesite should be completed by 1995. Sincethen there have been eight extensions to theoriginal planning permission.Any further extension makes a mockery ofthe planning system. There is already anover–provision of hazardous waste capacityin the North West.To fill the proposed extension, wastewould need to be imported from longdistances and over a very long period oftime. We cannot promote Skelmersdale bycontinuing landfilling hazardous waste atWhitemoss. We really did believe all this was behind us.We will fight this every inch of the way.Claire Pollard, Ashurst One Tenants andResidents AssociationSkem could be UK’sskateboarding hubI was pleased to be informed about the WestLancs Youth Zone project which is longoverdue and trust the council will endorse andagree to move on it quickly.Would it be possible to incorporate askateboard park or an extra bit to permit someskateboarding?Have you noticed the skatebarders tryingtheir best at the side of the Concourse, verydifficult.I believe skateboarding could become anOlympic sport. The skill required isconsiderable and the young have the bodydexterity to do it well.Has anybody noticed Southport’s skateboardpark/arena and, of course, the skateboarders?Quite mind–blowing.I suppose it’s not beyond the realm ofpossibility for Skelmersdale to become theUK’s skateboarding capital, given anappropriate level of council support.Graham Walker, Up HollandWrite to the Editor atClare House, 166 Lord Street, Southport PR9 0QAEmaileditorial@champnews.comNewsdesk01704 392 400Websitewww.champnews.comGroup EditorMalcolm HindleAround 67,000† people will read thisThey could have been reading YOUR message† Publisher’s statement. Champion Group 3 titles: 37,133 copies in Ormskirk and Skelmersdale.Call the Champion sales team NOW on01704 392 392and put YOUR business here next week
