General Manager’s LetterStaff party: On Wednesday, 27February, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Club</strong> took all staff to <strong>the</strong>annual spring dinner at <strong>the</strong> Treasure LakeSeafood Restaurant in Central. Over70 staff and family members enjoyed agreat Chinese dinner party, during whichfabulous prizes were won, many songssung and games played. But <strong>the</strong> bestactivity of <strong>the</strong> evening had to have been<strong>the</strong> consumption of alcoholic beverages.This would explain <strong>the</strong> slower service<strong>the</strong> next day as many heads must havebeen feeling a bit sore or possibly sorryfor <strong>the</strong>mselves.I must thank all <strong>the</strong> members whohave contributed to this event through <strong>the</strong>staff gratuity donation, without which itwould not have been such a success.Car parking: As I write this article, weare well into <strong>the</strong> last phase of repairsto <strong>the</strong> concrete and structure of <strong>the</strong> carpark. After encountering a setback dueto extensive drilling revealing new areasof concern, we are now back on track.We await delivery of <strong>the</strong> new playgroundsurface and new games to reopen thispopular area.Once this car park repair is behindus <strong>the</strong>re still is one major structuralrepair to do next year, <strong>the</strong> 70-feet longexpansion joint and drainage between<strong>the</strong> Patio and <strong>the</strong> swimming pool.We plan to do this next winter aroundJanuary and February. At this stage weforecast only a few days of Patio closure,which we certainly will keep as brief aspossible. Once that is done, <strong>the</strong> whole<strong>Club</strong> structure will have been practicallyrebuilt over seven years.Middle Island slopes: You mayhave noticed last month scaffoldingand workers on <strong>the</strong> Middle Island,part of our obligation to maintain <strong>the</strong>registered slope. Water infiltrationand nature working its way througha crack created a small cavity below<strong>the</strong> concreted surface that threatenedcollapse at some stage. Beforesuch a thing could happen, we tookno chances and rebuilt <strong>the</strong> slopesurfacing. Things being what <strong>the</strong>y arein Hong Kong, this safety work mustbe done regularly, at least every fiveyears.Unauthorised storage: Over <strong>the</strong> lastfew months increasing numbers of itemshave been left in our car park withoutnotice to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Club</strong>. Some things havebeen here for a long time and must beremoved. If you have such items outsideyour locker area, <strong>the</strong>n please remove<strong>the</strong>m as soon as possible. The <strong>Club</strong> willtag each left item, and if it is not removedwithin a month, <strong>the</strong> club reserves <strong>the</strong>right to dispose of unclaimed items.St Baldrick’s Day: The 2012 St Baldrick’sfundraiser to fight children’s cancer at<strong>the</strong> ABC was a success again, with 16heads shaved and $232,058 raised. Therecord funds we raised were provided to<strong>the</strong> Children’s Cancer Foundation for <strong>the</strong>sole purpose of funding childhood cancerresearch projects in Hong Kong.Again this year, we offer our venuefor ano<strong>the</strong>r afternoon of fundraising onSaturday, 20 <strong>Apr</strong>il, from 3 pm to 6 pm. Asusual, some staff, including me, will shave<strong>the</strong>ir heads for this worthy cause. Race ReportsWaglan <strong>2013</strong>Races 8 and 9Words and photos by Philippe de MannyThe start to Waglan 8On Sunday, 24 February, <strong>the</strong><strong>Club</strong> ran <strong>the</strong> last two geometricraces of <strong>the</strong> season under verypromising wea<strong>the</strong>r conditions.The wind direction at 9:30 amwhen <strong>the</strong> committee boat left <strong>the</strong> main<strong>Club</strong>house indicated 60 degrees, while<strong>the</strong> anemometer gave a reading of 12knots average, gusting up to 18 knots.The tide prediction was not an issue.However <strong>the</strong> two-metre swells from<strong>the</strong> east, every seven metres, becamea real issue for <strong>the</strong> Race Officer whowent from golden-hued to green around<strong>the</strong> gills as soon as <strong>the</strong> committee boatwas anchored.“Contemptuous wordshung in <strong>the</strong> air.”It must have been obvious to <strong>the</strong>sailors passing by <strong>the</strong> committee boat.Contemptuous words such as “You looklike you are tossing your cookies,” “Timeto hug <strong>the</strong> porcelain, mate,” and “OUAH!Philippe, did you call for Ralph?,” all hungin <strong>the</strong> air.At any rate, <strong>the</strong> two races took placeas usual at <strong>the</strong> south of Lamma Island.They lasted about 90 minutes each,including small breaks in between transitto and from <strong>the</strong> racing area. The fleetreturned to Middle Island around 3:30 pmfor <strong>the</strong> prize-giving.The timing element of this raceseemed to go well. In fact, it could havebeen totally <strong>the</strong> opposite. On <strong>the</strong> way outto <strong>the</strong> racing area, <strong>the</strong> committee boatset course 190˚ towards <strong>the</strong> expecteddrop zone, as close as possible to <strong>the</strong>SAR boundary, leaving a safe sailing areafor our fleet to round that windward mark.While dropping <strong>the</strong> windwardmark, bigger waves than expected– uncontrollable for seconds – hit<strong>the</strong> mark-setting boat. At <strong>the</strong> sametime, <strong>the</strong> buoy rope got caught in <strong>the</strong>propeller, creating a situation thatdemanded swift action. As pulling <strong>the</strong>rope and using reverse power to untie<strong>the</strong> boat both proved unsuccessful,<strong>the</strong> last remaining solution was to cut<strong>the</strong> rope as close to <strong>the</strong> propeller aspossible in <strong>the</strong> hope that it would freeboth anchor and boat. Luckily this wasmanaged but we were left with littletime to set <strong>the</strong> course.At <strong>the</strong> end, everything was undercontrol, <strong>the</strong> RO’s breakfast went outfaster than in, <strong>the</strong> windward, leeward,gibe marks and start line got set, <strong>the</strong> fleetwas on <strong>the</strong> starting block and <strong>the</strong> firsttriangular race began.Actually, both Waglan races 8 and9 were sailed using <strong>the</strong> same triangularcourse, and as <strong>the</strong> wind remained stable<strong>the</strong> whole day, no changes in <strong>the</strong> buoypositions were necessary.Two boats did not start on <strong>the</strong> firstrace. Red Kite had a spinnaker problemon reaching <strong>the</strong> start line and Javelincame late, taking on <strong>the</strong> wrong sideof <strong>the</strong> committee boat, confusing <strong>the</strong>leeward mark with <strong>the</strong> start line.Elektra as usual was <strong>the</strong> fastest boaton water for both races but found itsmatch in HKPN with The Farr Side forWaglan 8 and Blackjack for Waglan 9.Elektra still was unbeatable under <strong>the</strong> IRCrating, though having a very close finishwith Blackjack in Waglan 9.P.14

Jebsen Marine,our sponsor for <strong>the</strong> year, gave generoussupport to this ever-more popular sailingevent. Jebsen Marine certainly will carryon next year as sponsor of a new seriesof island and geometric races.On this beautiful sunny Marchmorning, 25 boats were on <strong>the</strong> entrylist, with five potential division B boats.The wea<strong>the</strong>r forecast sadly predicteda day with no wind, which for a sailingrace clearly is not ideal. After <strong>the</strong> habitualconsultation of sailors during breakfast,two similar short courses for bothdivisions were chosen, taking <strong>the</strong> fleetfrom Deep Water Bay to south Lammaand back.On <strong>the</strong> way out, wind checks proved<strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r forecast right for once,and no wind was to be found within<strong>the</strong> normal starting area, making itobvious that if wind was to be found itwould be outside Round Island. Even<strong>the</strong>re, between 9:50 and 10:45, <strong>the</strong>anemometer recorded a wind average of3 knots, too little to start a race.Race Officer Philippe de Manny andhis newly appointed Assistant RaceOfficer Eileen Sze were pessimisticabout having a race and had <strong>the</strong>postponement and cancelling flagsready. Suddenly, just before raising<strong>the</strong>se flags, a light breeze was felt and4-knot winds appeared on <strong>the</strong> screen of<strong>the</strong> wind-speed recorder.Jumping <strong>the</strong> guns, so to speak, <strong>the</strong>decision to send <strong>the</strong> fleet was taken,flags changed and <strong>the</strong> fleet was “enroute” for a long, hot and slow race.On <strong>the</strong> way to Chesterman buoy, itwas still a struggle for <strong>the</strong> fleet to getmoving, and it took most of <strong>the</strong> fleet overone hour to round <strong>the</strong> buoy. After <strong>the</strong>start, <strong>the</strong> committee boat was stationedat <strong>the</strong> same mark, monitoring <strong>the</strong> windand looking at shortening <strong>the</strong> race on<strong>the</strong> way back. A chase boat was sent toSouth Lamma to lay <strong>the</strong> ABC roundingmark and get ready to shorten <strong>the</strong> race<strong>the</strong>re, if necessary. By noon <strong>the</strong> windpicked up slightly, getting <strong>the</strong> boatsmoving and avoiding <strong>the</strong> shortening of<strong>the</strong> race at Lamma at least for <strong>the</strong> fasterDivision A yachts. RO Philippe on <strong>the</strong>chase boat off Lamma was constantlychecking wind conditions with <strong>the</strong>committee boat at Chesterman. The ROdecided to shorten <strong>the</strong> Division A boats<strong>the</strong>re to ensure a full finish, while divisionB boats were set to finish at Lamma.On <strong>the</strong> fun-fact file for <strong>the</strong> race,Philippe called <strong>the</strong> committee boat onchannel 72 of <strong>the</strong> VHF, asking <strong>the</strong>mto change to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Club</strong> channel in orderto communicate. This was muchcommentedupon during <strong>the</strong> prize-givingby some sailors, who said that <strong>the</strong>ywere hoping for <strong>the</strong> committee boat toconfirm <strong>the</strong> Channel and thus to reveal to<strong>the</strong> whole fleet this well-guarded secret.Unfortunately for <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> secret channelremained undisclosed.Results were swiftly produced byEileen Sze and posted on <strong>the</strong> website <strong>the</strong>same evening, a great improvement fromprevious races, when sometimes it took afew days for uploading by <strong>the</strong> computerilliteratePhilippe.P.20

Race Reports29ers Nationals:The start of <strong>the</strong> raceABC Champions AgainBy Cosmas Grelon, photos by Nick HollisThe 29er National Championshipsthis year saw its largest fleet yet.With an impressive 11 29ers on<strong>the</strong> water, <strong>the</strong> waters were set for achallenging weekend. The ABC enteredthree boats, all coached by dinghy coachRory Godman.Nathan Bradley and I were out to defendour title of Hong Kong National Champions!Nathan and I have a tradition of neverhaving a very good first race. Although itis not intentional, it seems inevitable. Thisregatta was no different, even thoughwea<strong>the</strong>r conditions were average for us all.Some 10 seconds after <strong>the</strong> start gun went,we were upside down, swimming with <strong>the</strong>fishes, struggling to bring <strong>the</strong> boat upright.Eventually we got her up and were offagain. Since <strong>the</strong> wind was ra<strong>the</strong>r strong(12 – 15 knots) we were able to catch <strong>the</strong>pack up quickly. With a few boats capsizingon <strong>the</strong> way to <strong>the</strong> top mark we managed tocreep back into third place. By <strong>the</strong> bottommark we were second, and by <strong>the</strong> time wereached <strong>the</strong> next windward mark, we wereback to where we wanted to be; first.After this comeback we were feelingconfident and to our delight, we took allbullets with us, finishing <strong>the</strong> last race witha comfortable lead. The ABC’s NagisaSakai and Akira Sakai scored well, finishingsecond of <strong>the</strong> 11 boats. The ABC’s YannD’Argenlieu and Andy Service scoredimpressively, garnering some top threesto finish <strong>the</strong> first day in third. ABC resultsafter Day 1 were first, second and third.Day 2On <strong>the</strong> second day of racing, we were in itto win it but <strong>the</strong> conditions had worsenedovernight so <strong>the</strong> pressure was still on. Badluck forced Yann D’Argenlieu to miss <strong>the</strong>first two races due to gear breakages.Anything could happen betweenequipment failure, injury or just capsizingduring <strong>the</strong> race. We adjusted our forestaytension to <strong>the</strong> stronger conditions andtuned our sails accordingly. With windsgusting up to 25 knots and a fair bit ofswell, <strong>the</strong> first start involved many boatsnot on <strong>the</strong> start line, and some, althoughon <strong>the</strong> start line, inverted.Fortunately for us, we were uprightand shot off <strong>the</strong> line with speed when<strong>the</strong> gun went. We fought hard against<strong>the</strong> competitors but more so against<strong>the</strong> conditions as <strong>the</strong>y were brutal andpushed our limits fur<strong>the</strong>r. We took <strong>the</strong>first two bullets of <strong>the</strong> second day, butas <strong>the</strong> conditions softened Nagisa andAkira Sakai were hot on our heels. Sohot, in fact, that <strong>the</strong>y beat us in <strong>the</strong> lasttwo races, always overtaking us on <strong>the</strong>downwind and beating us both times by alittle more than a few boat lengths!Never<strong>the</strong>less, since Nathan and I hadaccumulated <strong>the</strong> fewest amount of pointsoverall we successfully managed to defendour title of National Champions! Nathanand I won <strong>the</strong> regatta with one race to go,and were pleased with our scorecard over<strong>the</strong> weekend. Yann recovered from beingforced to sit out <strong>the</strong> first two races andearned a top-three result at <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong>day. Gigi Sakai and Akira Sakai had a betterday, scoring two firsts to help <strong>the</strong>m safelyconfirm second place.All in all, <strong>the</strong> 29er Nationals this yearwere very successful with conditionssuitable to finding <strong>the</strong> competitors’limits, and <strong>the</strong>n pushing <strong>the</strong>m a little bitfur<strong>the</strong>r. Race reportsEricsson Inter-SchoolSailing Festival <strong>2013</strong>Words by Kevin Lewis, photos by Kevin Lewis and Michele FelderThe annual Inter-schools Sailing Festival is one of <strong>the</strong>highlights of youth dinghy sailing in Hong Kong. The event,which has grown every year since 2003, is sponsored byEricsson and supported by <strong>the</strong> ABC and NeilPryde.This March 9 and 10 saw 24 teams from schools across HongKong and Macau racing in predominantly light winds, startingfrom RHKYC Middle Island. The event takes <strong>the</strong> form of teamracing, with each school entering teams of six sailors in <strong>the</strong> Feva,Pico or Q’ba dinghies. Sailors need to work toge<strong>the</strong>r and useteam-race tactics to slow down opponent teams, as each race isonly a few minutes long, and a “win” is calculated on points.The Inter-schools Festival has grown in both stature andnumbers over <strong>the</strong> years. This time over 150 youth sailors wereinvolved. A tremendous amount of organization and calculationgoes on, and big thanks are due to both Sofia Mascia (RaceOfficer) and Richard Knight (organizer). With food, music, livecommentary, umpires and a huge team of volunteers, <strong>the</strong> <strong>2013</strong>event proved almost <strong>the</strong> best yet – only lacking in wind! Coasting … PastBy Stephen Davies, photos by William HeeringJunk in Hong Kong’s Western AnchorageStephen Davies has been a member of ABC since 1974.The former director of <strong>the</strong> Hong Kong Maritime Museumand now its consultant research fellow, he is a specialistin maritime history, with a career closely connected to <strong>the</strong>sea and Hong Kong.The Hong Kong Maritime Museumand Hans-Michael Jebsen recentlypublished my new book, “Coastingpast: <strong>the</strong> last South China coastal tradingjunks photographed by William Heering.”Through 143 stunning photographs, <strong>the</strong>book tells <strong>the</strong> story of <strong>the</strong>se traditionalChinese craft.Only a generation ago, junks weresailing through our waters on a routethat goes back millennia. This was <strong>the</strong>“Eastern Passage” between <strong>the</strong> river upto Guangzhou and <strong>the</strong> eastern coast ofGuangdong Province.China’s last coastal trading junksignored <strong>the</strong> hustle and bustle of <strong>the</strong> fastchangingmaritime world around <strong>the</strong>m.They were indifferent to <strong>the</strong> containerrevolution that was changing <strong>the</strong> globaleconomy. Then one day we all woke upto see <strong>the</strong>y had disappeared. This book isa photographic record of those last daysand a visual comment on a navigationalworld that goes back millennia.The book is on sale at <strong>the</strong> brilliantlylocated new premises of <strong>the</strong> Hong KongMaritime Museum in Central – can youthink of a better location for a maritimemuseum than on a pier bang in <strong>the</strong>middle of one of <strong>the</strong> most beautiful andhistoric harbours in <strong>the</strong> world?Work on navigation I’ve done recentlyas <strong>the</strong> museum’s CSSC MaritimeHeritage Research Fellow compares<strong>the</strong> routes and navigational techniquesshown in Chinese route guides from <strong>the</strong>late 16th through <strong>the</strong> mid-19th centuries.They show a stunning similarity. Whathad worked in <strong>the</strong> Ming Dynasty wasstill working more or less exactly <strong>the</strong>same way as <strong>the</strong> Qing Dynasty faced itsepochal clash with western imperialism.From <strong>the</strong> Bohai Gulf to <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rntip of Vietnam, a grand trunk route ranP.30


Plan of a traditional Chinese sailing junkdown China’s eastern coast, aroundHainan Island and beyond, clear of alldangers, traced out by what were calledzhēnlù ( 針 路 , needle paths). Each leg ofone of <strong>the</strong>se – recorded in memory, inchants, in route books and on rough routemaps – inhered a simple formula. Theformula ran “from A, steer direction x ;after y gēng ( 更 , or traditional 2.4 hourwatch), <strong>the</strong> ship reaches B”.By following <strong>the</strong> sequence of suchinstructions – <strong>the</strong> directions on any oneof <strong>the</strong> 48 on a Chinese compass card,like dīngwèi ( 丁 未 = 202.5 0 ) – a junk couldbe sailed safely down <strong>the</strong> coast to itsdestination clear of all danger.From all along this trunk route a vastnetwork spread out. The zhēnlù ran fromnavigational waypoint to navigationalwaypoint, each marking turning pointsfor <strong>the</strong> next leg and often also marking<strong>the</strong> point where one turned towards <strong>the</strong>coast into ports and navigable rivers.O<strong>the</strong>r waypoints might mark a branchroute that led for offshore destinationsfrom Japan to Jakarta. From o<strong>the</strong>rwaypoints <strong>the</strong> mariner would be guidedto an island or bay where good sheltercould be found for a night at anchor.The junks of Coasting Past very likelyused <strong>the</strong> same navigational techniques.After all, <strong>the</strong>re’s nowhere on a sailingjunk to put a radar, an echo sounder, achart table and charts and so on. Evensupposing <strong>the</strong>re had been <strong>the</strong> money tobuy such things, why would a traditionalnavigator, <strong>the</strong> hè zhǎng ( 荷 長 ), havebo<strong>the</strong>red? Like <strong>the</strong> yottigators most of usare in our home waters, he knew wherehe was and how to get where he wasgoing because he’d been doing it half alifetime and more. The Mk I eyeball, aprodigious memory, a lead line in case ofdoubt and maybe a rutter (route book); <strong>the</strong>hè zhǎng was navigationally fully equipped.From what scholars have found,not all coastal junks would have carriedwritten navigational materials even in<strong>the</strong> last half of <strong>the</strong> 20th century. Insteadmany – almost certainly <strong>the</strong> smallerones that plied shorter, local routesas those through Hong Kong waters –were navigated down <strong>the</strong>ir traditionalroutes from memorized data. learned as a child, often in <strong>the</strong> form ofchanted songs – a common, age-oldfeature of vernacular navigation. Thereare indications of route songs in classicalGreek epics (think of The Odyssey),in Viking sagas, in 15 th -century Arabnavigational sources and in <strong>the</strong> world ofPolynesian navigators. But, given <strong>the</strong> lowstatus of China’s mariners, few if any of<strong>the</strong>se route songs appear to have beenrecorded, and <strong>the</strong> last junkmasters whoknew <strong>the</strong>m are today long gone.How were <strong>the</strong> routes <strong>the</strong> hè zhǎngsailed and recorded, when <strong>the</strong>y were?We do not know for sure. China’smaritime world was always somethingof a Cinderella despite its amazing reachthroughout Asian waters. That meant thatits massive practical database did notleave behind it <strong>the</strong> huge printed recordthat we see beginning to accumulate in<strong>the</strong> western world in <strong>the</strong> 15th century,first growing slowly and <strong>the</strong>n, in <strong>the</strong> 18thcentury, beginning its mad acceleration to<strong>the</strong> millionsof written and printed records extant by<strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> 19th century.We know that junkmasters keptpersonal rutters that recorded <strong>the</strong>irknowledge and experience in <strong>the</strong> set ofzhēnlù that represented <strong>the</strong> network of<strong>the</strong>ir home port’s traditional trade. Almostnone have survived.We have examples in <strong>the</strong> beautifulYale maps in <strong>the</strong> Sterling MemorialLibrary of Yale University, and inwonderful compendia like <strong>the</strong> MáoYuányí’s ( 茅 元 儀 , [1594–1640?]) MaoKun Map (more properly <strong>the</strong> 鄭 和 航 海圖 [Zhèng Hé hánghăi tú], Zhenghenavigation map) and in Xiè Zhāng’s ( 張燮 ), Dōngxī Yáng Kǎo (An investigation of<strong>the</strong> East and West Oceans). And in <strong>the</strong>newly restored Selden Map ( 東 西 洋 航 海 圖 ,Dōngxī Yang Hánghǎi Tú), contemporarywith Xiè Zhāng’s work. Taken altoge<strong>the</strong>r,<strong>the</strong> many individual or home port routepatterns coalesced into <strong>the</strong> core routenetwork that centuries of coastal andoverseas trading had created,including <strong>the</strong> Eastern Passage ourGuangdong junks sailed.Today even yottigation, <strong>the</strong> lastlink to a traditional world of sailingand navigating, is going. A worldthis author grew up in – one notso far-removed from <strong>the</strong> last ofTongjiang map, courtesy of <strong>the</strong> Sterling MemorialLibrary, Yale University<strong>the</strong> junk sailors – is fast dying. No neednow for long-honed seamanship skillsand a good visuo-spatial memory storingmental route maps of headlands andchannels, islands and hazards, roadsteadsand havens. We have our iPads andiPhones with built-in GPS systems andapps with all <strong>the</strong> charts to take us fromhere to Australia. And with <strong>the</strong> app to <strong>the</strong>Hong Kong Observatory, Predict Windor Windguru, <strong>the</strong> tides and <strong>the</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>rliterally are at our fingertips.Do we have <strong>the</strong> same experienceas <strong>the</strong> old hè zhǎng as his junk dipped,curtsied and creaked its way through<strong>the</strong> D’Aguilar Channel and out into <strong>the</strong>Eastern Approaches?
