1. INTRODUCTION1.1 ScopeThis Interface Specification (IS) defines the characteristics of a signal transmitted from Global Positioning System(GPS) satellites to navigation receivers on radio frequency (RF) link 1 (L1). While there are multiple signalsbroadcast within the frequency band of L1, this IS defines only the signal denoted L1 Civil (L1C). Throughout thisdocument, the L1 carrier denotes 1575.42 MHz.1.2 Interface DefinitionUtilizing the L1 open link defined in this document, GPS space vehicles (SVs), except Block II/IIA, IIR/IIR-M, andIIF SVs, shall transmit continuous earth coverage L1C signal that provides the ranging codes and the system dataneeded to accomplish the navigation mission to all users having RF visibility to SVs and suitable receivers.1.3 IS Approval and ChangesThe GPS Wing (GPSW) is the necessary authority to make this IS effective. The GPSW administers approvalsunder the auspices of the Configuration Control Board (CCB), which is governed by the appropriate GPSWOperating Instruction. The GPSW CCB membership includes the United States Department of Transportationrepresentative for civil organizations and public interest. The Interface Control Contractor (ICC), designated by the government, is responsible for the basic preparation, obtaining approval, distribution, retention, and Interface Control Working Group (ICWG) coordination of this IS inaccordance with GP-03-001A.A proposal to change the approved version of this IS can be submitted by any ICWG participating organization tothe GPSW and/or the ICC. The ICC is responsible for the preparation of the change paper and change coordinationin the form of a Proposed Interface Revision Notice (PIRN) and is responsible for coordination of PIRNs with theICWG. The ICWG coordinated PIRN must be submitted as an Interface Revision Notice (IRN) to the GPSW CCBfor review and approval.1 IS-GPS-800A8 June 2010
