It’s Done with MirrorsBy Tom DiritoHoliday Valley PGA Assistant Golf ProfessionalPurpose: This off-course alignment and body positioncheck is great feedback at any time. To do it you needa large mirror, preferably a full length model. Thiswill teach you the correct body position at addressand prevent severe alignment problems when you getout on the course.Procedure: Assume your address from a face-on position,so your shoulders are parallel with the mirror.Now follow this three-step procedure:1.Look to see if you are relaxed. The muscles in youarms, chest and shoulders should not be bulging ortaut. If you muscles are tense, you can’t swing freelyand fluidly. If they are relaxed, they will be moreresponsive and will move faster. That means moredistance with less effort. Check also that your grippressure is light.2.Check your stance width. The insides of your feetshould be shoulder-width apart to provide both balanceand an ability to turn.3.Check the position of your hands. They should beslightly ahead of the ball.Now address the ball so you are aiming directly at themirror. Don’t waste toomuch concentration trying to be ‘perfect’ bythe time you get to the first tee.Procedure: Stretch your muscles, looseningyour arms, legs, back, shoulders and torso.Use the ‘club behind the back’ drilldescribed the week earlier. Now hit someeasy shots with a 9-iron, concentrating moreon feel than on the distance. After maybe 10shots, move on to middle iron and hit somemore. Finally, hit five or six shots – nevermore – with the driver. Conserve your energy.Finish with some small pitch shots todevelop a sense of feel and rhythm.
